Title: Are my seals leaking (pictures included)
Post by: Bumbazor on 07 February 2010, 16:59:41
Can I have opinions on the following pictures please?
Before I took all the bits off I suspected the crank seal was leaking. Mine here looks ok but I have no idea of what a faulty one would look like. Before I took the picture I wiped around the crank area to get a better view of the seal.
However the cam seals look really dodgy.

I think cam number 4 looks particularly knackered, but what about the others?

All 4 cam seal look breaked! Crank seal looks ok and oil from the cams can't get down that far unless they leak really badly. How far up from the crank does the oil get? Is it all the way up?

Camseals look rough but I dont think they are the source of your oil leak, the head and block castings look too clean, no sign of oil running down.

Crank seal looks like the likely cause, looks very similar to mine prior to change and 2 years on the front of the engine is still completely dry.

Other possible causes in that area are:
oil pressure sensor (easy to eliminate)
Oil pump to block gasket (dont even think about it)
Upper sump to block (have to lower subframe so try easier options first)

Yes, there was oil (of whatever age; I can't tell, probably some new some old) in most of the cambelt rear cover until I cleaned it.

I have removed the cambelt rear cover and forgot to get a bigger picture of the front of the engine and to be honest can't remember what state it is in; will do so tomorrow.

As you know I originally thought the crank seal was to blame but seeing this I am thinking differently now, although I will still change the crank seal.
I'd be interested in hearing more about how to check the oil pump to block gasket, and the upper sump to block you mention.

You've done the hard part so you might as well replace the crank seal while its stripped. I would say the cam seals also need replacing ;)
