Title: Dispack Relocation...is it safe??
Post by: MutantCav on 11 February 2010, 19:15:15
Have sorted my recent acquisition, needed a replacement lead and dispack...as I was short on time doing the job before it got dark I didnt get a chance to remove the upper inlet and get the old dispack out...so the new one is currently sat in the engine bay area on the passengers side by the oil filler pipe...

Firstly, is it safe? If not what can I do to make it safe?? Or does it need to go back where its meant to be??

Any help much appreciated :y

can't see it being very secure there, its going to move around  :-/

Would be best to remove the old one, and refit in the same place.  :y

Seems pretty well wedged tbh lol I'm just worried that it might melt something or set light or whatever...obviously I can put it back where its meant to be when I have the time tomorrow, but in the mean time, or if it can be located, then it would make life easier for any future replacement :y

Not really an issue really, considering how often they are replaced. Replacement DIS will outlast the rest of the car

Again, I have to disagree with Tunnie!

Replaced the dispack (with genuine GM unit,) on my Elite four years ago and it's now FUBAR after less than 40K miles.
it's been getting wet and has started to  - best description I can give here is 'de-laminate' - coming away in layers.
It's in a stupid place and when I get round to it, I'm gonna re-site it so it doesn't get water dripped on it and easier to get at.
Can you make some sort of bracket to hold yours in place permanently now you have moved it?
It doesn't have to be made from girders, but ideally, should be grounded (earthed).

Thats due to the scuttle! The gap around the wiper arm will let in water, it drips on the dis/engine. Seal that, no more problems  :y

Yep - just read your reply on another thread about that. I will do that, cheers. :y

Still have to replace the bloody dispack though. >:(

Its not a fun job, i found putting a plank of wood across the engine and sitting on that with scuttle off, gives good access. Worth making a diagram of the setup of the DIS so when its mounted you know which socket goes to which pot.

Some seem to suffer more with water ingress, not put any sealant on any of our 3  :-/

Did I read an earlier post that said the engine block acted as a heat sink for the dis pack

I shall be leaving it where it is and re-siting the new one.
I might need Vectra/Cavalier/Calibra leads and elongate the low tension wires, but that's peasy!

Will also be peasy to see what lead goes where in the future too ;)

It will only take about an hour or so tomorrow morning to put it back where its meant to be...at least I know its fixed the problem :)

Will be ok if relocated provided it is adequately "anchored" to prevent movemaent  :y

V6 was designed for Vectra, fitted in that car, its location makes perfect sense  :y

Anyone got any pics of the relocation?  Did you do it with the standard plug leads?

I have this job for the weekend, now beginning to wonder whether it's worth relocating.

Oh, and to those who have done the job, is it a plenum off job if changing the HT leads, or is there a clever way around it?

Cheers,
James

You cant do it with the standard leads. Get some aftermarket ones, Unipart, Bosch, or similar. I had to trim approx 40mm off the top capping of the cable/vac pipe trunking to allow the dis pack power lead to come forward sufficently to plug onto the relocated dis.  I left the old dis pack c/w leads still attached in position and just tucked the old leads out of the way ::) there are some pics already on here somewhere- search for dis pack relocation :y

Steady on, chaps! I had a 1992 Cavalier GSi, which I still consider to be the best car I've ever had, although the Omega is starting to supplant it in my affections!

It was Diamond Black like the Omega and I had a s/s Magnex exhaust fitted with cat replacement pipe. And no, it wasn't a chavvy drainpipe exhaust!

I was even sad enough to take a gallery of photos of it..... :)

Yes - relocate!

I relocated mine on the 3.0 V6 to just in front of the oil filler neck.

Right well its irrelevant now...spend 90 minutes this morning taking off the plenum, upper manifold etc, putting the dispack back where it should be and putting it back together...

Main thing is of course that the car now runs like a dream and purrs like a kitten :y

It just needs something to cover the dispack and stop water leaking onto it...any ideas??

It's already there ... the scuttle ....  you just need to stop THAT leaking !!! Wiper spindles and the "join" of the 2 parts on the right hand side are the common leakage poits

I still reckon the dispack could do with an umbrella! :)
