i have been told that my v6 2.6 needs its coil pack is it an easy job to do and how do i do it please

You have 2 coil packs! One on the 1 3 5 plugs & another on the 2 4 6 plugs ;) I'm sure you'll be advised specifically but as far as I know, you just remove a couple of bolts & pull them up & off. :y

I read on here recently that the bolts holding the dis packs on are 6mm, but they pass through holes which are threaded for 8mm bolts. The idea is that you remove the 6mm bolts then screw in a couple of 8mm bolts to use as handles to pull out the packs.
A though has occurred (ouch) - if the 8mm bolts were long enough could they not be used as a sort of extractor to gently drive the dis pack plug caps off the plugs? Might avoid sudden release of the pack and possible damage?

possible but you'd be there for ever winding in the thread.
If pulling out wrap a rag around the fuel line unions to avoid banging the pac off it on the drivers side, pas side you will have the usual battle with the cable tray obviusly, tie it up out the way.

may as well change the plugs while your in there, vx are cheapest, if you see any oil in the plug wells stop and change the cam cover seals before going any further.
plug on each pac is a push down tab, eeeasy job.

The Haynes workshop manual refers to most things as left or right as if sat in the car but then when talking about the engine switches to referring to left or right as if you had your head under the bonnet.
We have a few (very welcome) Catera and Opel owners but the most prolific posters all seem to drive right hand drive cars. Sorry.
Maybe we should use port & starboard as they do on boats & planes?

That's the whole point .... they don't! :-? The left cam-cover for example has the oil filler neck in it :y :y

Changed mine a few weeks ago... it is stamped on the coil pack which cylinders they are for - it's easy to read on the 1-3-5 side, but is obscured by the DBW trickery on the other... Straightforward job to change on the 2.6, except a bit fiddly to get the DBW wiring tray open in the cold weather!
There's also a cylinder layout stamped on the top of my block at the left hand side, looking from the front of the car :y

246 is the cable tray side (1 hour and a battle)
135 is the fuel line side( easy job )
screw an appropriate size bolt into the the brass insert in the pack to pull them/it out. Avoid levering with a screw driver...
