how many miles can i expect to get from a budget tyre? and how much better from a branded one?

all depends on how hard you drive it :-/
i tend to find out which one is the budget tyre then go for the one above :y

You will find it is probably the other way round. Better tyres grip better and hence wear faster, but you do need a decent tyre on a car this big.

personally I wont recommend budget tires, especially the chinese made..they perform very bad on wet braking tests ..
but if you will prefer them at least go for Kumho KU31 or Toyo..
life times really depends on your daily trip road types
and your style.. so a definite answer not easy..
and GoodYear excellence and Birdgestone Turanza may have fairly longer life but not as good as the expensive models like Eagle F1, SPort contact 3 (conti), Potenza

well i had federals 25 000 miles ago, and it apears they will need replaced now..i was quoted £102 for each branded one, and £55 for budget... dont drive hard at all.. does it make a difference to get good ones at the back?

Totally agree with Cem here ... the only thing that keeps you on the road are 4 very small patches of rubber...
Many things try and take you off the road, centripetal forces, acceleration forces, braking forces, road layout, road surface, weather, your right foot, your hands on the steering ...
all of which are fighting those 4 little patches ... IMHO you want those little patches to be good little patches, all day every day ... :)

Agreed all round, when they do let go it is very predictable and very easy to handle, no sudden surprise.
They are brilliant fun in the snow, my back end went about 5 times further than the front, all very controlled. Braking was good too, which was a suprise in the snow on a "cheap" tyre.

thanks all...is 25 k a good mileage from a branded tyre? if i could repeat this then i would feel ok about renewing expensive tyres.

Impossible to answer, you going to get so many various. V6/4pot, type of miles, length of runs, driving styles, tyre pressures, type road surface, wishbones, camber & toe settings.....
You will get figures of 3k to 50k, on all types of tyres

I've had 7 tyres in 40k... First 4 were badly worn on the inner edges due to suspension geometry (rotated front to back)... 1 Was Punctured (and had been worn due to geometry, 2 (recent ones) were worn on the inner edges but have had a badly worn Idler :y :y
I reckon that I've had 15k out of them (on average) even with bad geometry for a period of time and lots of "playing" ::) ::)

falken 912 crap tyre avoid, 15k
Dunlop sport maxx 2, 20k i think he said. good tyre noisy
Dunlop Sp 9000 12k iirc tad cheaper, noisy
above are driven hard esp the Dunlop owners.
Michelin primacy 30k hard compound not much grip compared to above but still far better than falken,driven steady,very expensive.
Conti sc3 currently fitted excelent grip wet or dry quiet stable, no complaints except price is a bit steep, suspect they wont last long, will be happy to get 15k out of them, does anyone else have experience of sc3 life? just as a guide...?

My rears are wearing nicely. Mind you, they must have a good few k on them by now.

I think 25k is reasonable, but of course depends on many factors.
The Nexens that the previous owner put on my facelift estate are doing well 22k and decent amount of tread left.
Previously I got 25-30k out of a set of Khumos, and had good experience with Falkens (I think512). Both handled fine.
My mini f/l elite is not doing so well. It has Barum's currently at 17k, will need changing soon. Handling is ok.
Next set will either be Khumho KU31 (if I can spell it..) or Falken 452. I don't see the point spending more.

Spend most of my time on the M40, but even in the twisties still find it good. Not at the limit, but 80ish down the lanes and its fine. Chuck it around round-abouts in wet or dry, grips well. But then again 4 pot engine is not that heavy, plus i am on standard suspension, not MV6 :-/
