Hi i've read in some posts that when you change the cambelt you should change the water pump could someone tell me the reason for this, and should you change the water pump everytime you do the cambelt many thanx john :y

The reason for this is if waterpump fails, the belt usually snaps (it happened to me).
You don't have to change it every time but I would suggest you do so ( or at least every second time).
If the waterpump is broken you need to change the belt also when changing the pump.
And it is cheaper to change the pump cause of belt than to change the belt cause of waterpump

Its recommended that the water pump be changed every 80,000 miles although I would replace mine at every cambelt change 40,000 miles as the water pumps are quite cheap and when doing the cambelt its only another 3 bolts to replace the water pump :y

Changing water pumps when you change the cam belt is more applicable to 4 pot cars where the cam belt also drive the water pump. You have a 'fan belt' to drive your water pump on a V6  :y

I would. A water pump isn't expensive and once you've got the car stripped for the cambelt its only an extra 3 bolts to do the water pump ;)

If its not been changed already, at 80k you should generally change it.   Only costs 25 quid and if you later need to do it you'll have a couple of hours additional labour on top.

(In the case of 4 pots it is more critical though, as if the pump fails, it will likely take out the cambelt resulting in serious engine damage)

 :'( The local VH dealers have just quoted me £370- for the cambelt change and £507 for a cambelt and pump change (which they claimed was just the extra price of the part!)  I can't believe they'd want £137 for a water pump!!

Out of interest, how much is the tool to lock the cams, is it essential, and is there another way to do the job without the corect item?

The prices you were quoted are the non trade club prices. I think the prices are £126 for the cambelt kit and about £76 for the water pump and thats the genuine stuff, but you can get cheaper than that and good quality as well ;)

You can get the cam locking/timing tools off Ebay, prices vary but I got mine for £60 and I would go for a sealey one and not the Laser type and its a must to do the cambelt kit properly.

While you are at it, I would recommend getting an OOF cambelt change DVD. Well produced and easy to follow.
