Frist off mate welcome to the forum the peeps on here a great and will help you out.....I have had the same problem mate does you heater get warm when your not moving an the engine idel if it does get warm'ish and then goes cold when you drive off that would be your thermostat. I don't have much of an idea with 2.2 but i don't think it will be your head gasket....I'm sure one of the other guys on here will have more of a clue and they will help more than i can. Good luck mate. :y :y

Welcome m8,
The cooling system is a pressurised one anyway, that is how it able to run without it boiling the coolant.
Is it using or leaking coolant?
When you start from cold is there any bubbles, any smell of fuel or exhaust from within the header tank? If so it may be a sign that the head gasket is on its way out.
When starting from cold put you hand on the top hose to the rad and keep it there while the engine warms up. If it stays cold and then suddenly gets hot the thermostat is working ok.
Take the vacuum pipe off the Heater Bypass Valve and see if that makes a difference because then the heater valve is permanently open.
Finally if the heaters are still cold you will have to try to back flush the heater matrix. There is a great guide of how to in the Maintenance Guide section of the forum.
If none work re-post the problem.

Hi, I'm new here myself but your problem sounds like no thermostat fitted or seized open, or heater warm water feed has been blanked off due to matrix leaking? Hope not! :'(

could it be a blocked rad and needs flushing, just a thought and dont cost anything

Without a doubt .. first thing to try is the vac pipe off the top of the HBV (don't forget to stick a bolt in the vac pipe to block it)
HBV will then "default" to full heat .. with any luck .. :)
Running with no cap on can eventually cause problems like you had as the boiling point is back down to "normal" .. the whole idea of the system pressurizing with the cap on is to raise the boiling point. This prevents "local boiling" at hot areas of the system causing steam/vapour which might be what you had.

Update re no heater! Whilst i was away on a booze cruise this weekend iv had some work done on problem, It looks as if before i bought the car it as had a problem with heater matrix (ie) leaking coolant! so some idiot blanked it off & yes just replaced it with neet water (no antifreeze) of coarse with the cold snap we had froze up, then when they tried to start it up it caused the impellers to brake off on the water pump (hence hot top end cold lower end) the car runs without overheating now :y, next step to try heater matrix! Any help or advice gladly appreciated. :-X
