Apparently geoff,it stops nasty smells from outside entering the cabin. :y

Like all cars (virtually all cars have recirc), it recirculates the air in the car, rather than drawing in fresh air from outside.
This can be useful in traffic, to keep the fumes out. Can also assist with demisting. Downside, if left on, you don't get so much fresh air in car, that can lead to drowsiness.
Facelift climate Omegas have an air quality sensor, and controls the recirc automatically (hence why facelifts MUST use the carbon pollen filter)

I think that I am right in saying that a flap closes in front of the blower motor to stop air from coming from outside If you look behind the pollen filter you can see the flap, operate the switch and you can see it open and close I believe the fan has to be running and maybe in auto mode , dont put fingers into fan area ouch.
