So, brother in law came up today to give me a hand doing this flipping head gasket. Day didn't start well when I couldn't find the keys. Took me 2 hours to finally find them (one of my girls had 'tidied' the living room, this equated to putting everything on the mantle-piece into a carrier bag and putting the carrier bag completely out of the way)
We didn't get out there till 12.45 and never really made a start till close on 1.15.
But then my luck seemed to change. I was dreading doing this (as you'll know if you've read my previous posts) but the removal of the head is no worse than any car i've done before, in fact, with the amount of space in the engine bay it was really a lot easier than I expected. Of course this will probably come back and bite me on the @rse when I get to putting it back together.
So, we got the head off. By this point the light was fading and we had lost all feelings in our extremities so we just had a 5 min glance over the head.
Think we found where the hg was gone, between 5 & 6

But we also found across five pairs of valves, this :(

Now, its stupid question time, is this common, are these terminal cracks, or is it some sort of casting thing. I have looked into the head where one of the valves was open and the 'crack' did NOT go into the valve seat.
Please someone, give me some good news :'( :'( :'(
Thanks as ever

I'm not an expert on Oil Burner Heads but I would say it's probably fine.
I assume you're going to have the head looked over and pressure tested by an engineer? They'll answer the question :y :y

TBH money is so very tight at he moment that if I could have got away with not having it looked at I would.
What sort of money are we looking at?
I thought I'd get a loads more replys to this question. Has anyone got a TD head sitting in their garage that they could have a look and see if those marking are there?
Or failling that, anyone got A TD head they will never use and would maybe like to sell me?

Each one looks pretty much identical in the pic... wonder if it's pretty much normal...
If it's not going into the valve seats, and inside the fire ring (which it obviously will be) then I don't see a problem.. ?

ive got a 2.5 td head in my garage ill have a look in the morning for you mate

Exactly what I was thinking, they seem too 'uniform' to be a problem. (Wishful Thinking Mode: Engaged ;D)

Must say, got the engine apart and was amazed at the complete lack of wear (157,000 miles). As far as I know its the original engine (put me right there Jaime). I know it came out for a few months but was put back in.
I realise theres a lot of negative comments about the way BMW do what they do, but god they can build an engine!!!!

AFAIK, thats original block and ancillaries (no reason to suspect otherwise), but head was from another engine. V5 will confirm if its orig engine :y

Keep on top of the servicing (oil change every 3-4k), they will go on. Its the black sludge that kills them (blocks the internal cylinder cooling jets, and wears the chains)

Whats your opinion on those cracks Jaime????

Done a few deisel gasket jobs in my time, although they look worrying those cracks are pretty normal....in fact I would be concerned if there weren't any....
