Title: Rocker gaskets being done - what else to check
Post by: Dracoro on 22 February 2010, 16:26:04
My mechanic is doing the rocker gaskets on my 2.5 V6 next week (something I knew needed to be done when I bought it, finally getting round to having it done). Anyway, as well as checking the rocker covers for warping (£?) anyone know what else is worth doing given the bits will be off? bypass valve? (check or replace?)

Clean the breathers mate - blocked breathers probably caused the cam cover gasket leakage  :y

While you are at it you may as well clean the ICV  :y

What are the breathers? How do they cause the issue?

Look for the guide in the Maint section - 'Cleaning the V6 breather system' - or similar.  print out and give to your mech.

Change spark plugs - they probably need doing if they've been sitting in oil and access is much easier when the camcovers are off.

Must use Vauxhall gaskets, not pattern, else they will fail quickly.

Plastic cam covers don't warp unless the mechanic is an idiot.

Clean breather system and throttle body, else they will fail again.

I didn't know idiot mechanics made cam covers warp.

They do when they swing on the breaker bar to tighten them up in the hope of stopping them leaking in the first place. !!

So far, useless, retarded mechanics are the only known way of warping the tinkers.

Obviously, said gormless, useless, retarded mechanic will try and blame something else rather than admit incompitence, hence the myth about warped Omega cam covers.

Cam cover bolts should be torqued to 8Nm and not a Nm more ....

Now .. if you get the chance, set up 2 bits of metal and a bolt .. try and do 8Nm without a torque wrench ... 99% of the time you will overtighten if you try by hand ... even with a small spanner.

Torque wrench properly set is a must for such a small value.

And when have you ever seen certain types of mechanics (99% of them!) ever use a torque wrench?

Thanks chaps.

Have absolute faith in my mechanic (he's a mate as well), a proper jobby, not a glorified "fitter". I trust him with my S2000 and he has done a good job with my old Westie plus other cars I've had.

Who I don't have faith in, is the previous people who've worked on the car (same goes for any car I always think!).

Totally agree ... what they do ... and what they SHOULD do .. are totally different. And the ones that do use a torque wrench don't know what they are doing half the time.

Last week I had to have a puncture repaired .. the idiot set the torque wrench up beautifully ... tightened 'til it "broke" .. then went a further 30 degrees. When I asked him why .. he said "thats how you use a torque wrench .. its called angle tightening".

Manager was called, wheel nuts undone ... then tightened by me.

Tried to argue they should pay for new bolts .... got nowhere.. :(

I've heard mention, that if replacing the rocker gaskets that there are other things that should be replaced/checked?

Heater Bypass Valve? - Is this just a check or something that should be replaced?
Spark plugs - I assume a check will establish if new ones are needed?
HT Leads - only if damaged?

Thanks again all.

If the history of the spark plugs is not known then get them done, also get him to check the Dis Pac for any signs of corrosion, cracking etc, he may need to use a mirror. Good luck..............
