Put the key in the ignition & turn on after you've reconnected the battery.

Before trying to start the engine de-activate the immobilser on the key/fob thingy when the key is in the 'running' position i.e. before using the starter motor. :y

If the alarm goes off, just turning the ignition on ie not start it, just be enough to silence the alarm.  ;)

the immobiliser is the chip in the key, not the central locking remote.

My fault for putting a' /' instead of 'or' between key and fob

usually the alarm goes off when the car battery is dead, does the car start when you turn the key?

the battery certainly isnt flat as it started a jag minutes before reconnecting it and it takes PLENTY power to start that! the engine was turning over fast enough but it didnt start... maybe didnt turn it over long enough, it has been covered in snow for days and not run....??? didnt want to try to much incase i caused more problems...
