Title: Estate Ariel (again)
Post by: tunnie on 24 February 2010, 10:53:23
So i bought a genuine Ariel for the estate, looks ok but its bent by the spoiler quite a bit:

Is that normal? Its got quite a bit of flex in it, will it get damaged?  :-/

How easy was it to fit? I'm concerned about removing the head lining to replace mine (The rubber surround is disintegrating)

had a pattern metal one which snapped off, this was just screwed in to the base...

Nope, that's not right.  On my estate with the tailgate fully open it just about misses the aerial which must mean that yours isn't right in some way.

This is an aerial from an estate and not a saloon, don't know if there's any difference.

Alternatively is it rotated round enough?  I think my aerial has a round bit at the bottom that allows me to twist it round even though it's fully screwed in.

tunnie - if you recall when I replied to your original post I mentioned mine is almost straight up for that very reason.  There must be a different type for estates with a spoiler.

loooks like the spacer is missing that goes betwix the areil and the base.

I tried to find the pics (from sounds2k) from when I bought the car but they seemed to have dropped off the for sale board..

From memory the bit on my car is the same as yours, but the detachable bit has a ball shaped end containing the threaded female socket at an angle to the aerial.  Result is that when screwed on the aerial sticks up vertically and doesn't foul on the spoiler. (It does foul on my garage door but that's another story..)

I don't think the ball would separate from the aerial, but I'm not with the car right now to check.

maybe its the base?  :-/ Or needs a much longer one. It seems to work ok, might see how long it lasts....

That is the correct base and aeriel, as I understand things.  What is missing, however, is a wee adaptor piece which re-angles the aeriel so that the spoiler misses (or at the least, reduces) the contact.

I did have details of the prodrive one in my inbox but, as expected, its been auto deleted at some stage due to PM box filling....

E-bay do have similar, check items 150416343681 and 400053419369.  You will have to confirm which thread - M5 or M6 - is used however....

Will post a piccy of mine later if you need or you can browse back the gallery for my 'new car' pics and you will see it in use.   :y

that's the same as mine.
Is the round bit separate then?  I've never tried removing it.

i had the same problem, fixed for now with some discreet trimming and sealing with bath sealant and a layer of black paint, will need to get a proper seal at some point  ::)
