Title: Why 'limp mode' ?

Any ideas why my 2.2 petrol Omega  sometimes ( maybe 1 in 15) starts in limp mode with the associated low power. No light comes on and is always overcome by switching off and re-starting straight away . Thanks

You need to get the stored codes read off your car. Where are you Steve?

I have considered getting a reader , are cheap ones available on eBay for £23.98   satisfactory ? If not, what  is recommended in the ' cheap' range . Thanks

I mean in the range of those advertised around £20  -  £30. Is there a problem with these ? do they give accurate readings ? false readings?  miss errors ? etc  What is gained  with more expensive readers say £100 + etc

I bought an ELM327 based cheap one .. and found it a total pain to be honest. So I bought the maxscan which I find much better. It only does engine stuff .. but that is sufficient for my needs... I doubt I'd understand much else !!!

Hi Steve,
Can't argue with 'good' the advice to get your codes read. My facelift 2.2 ecotec auto estate suffered from the same problem for months till it couldn't be cured by switching off and restarted. Anecdotal advice was to fit a new GM camshaft sensor, ...but do get the codes read first.
I did just that with some great advice from Kevin Wood and His Tech 2 :) :y and then fitted a new 'GM' cam sensor (sourced via Andyc) , and as if by magic ...problem solved and no more limp home problems on start up. Its a definite DIY job if you're at all 'handy and took me an hour and a half to do the job and cost about £60'ish.
Have written a 'How to' and hope it will be on the forum in a short while.

I suspect the faults you're seeing, you want a reader that can do engine and gearbox.  Legal versions of these will be beyond the budget you suggest (like 10 times over :o) :(

Sounds like cam sensor problem (common symptom on a 2.2), but you need to get the codes read to confirm.
