Title: 3.2 Elite - Auto Sport Mode Selection
Post by: jyr001 on 24 February 2010, 19:59:35
Hi all, as you can see I'm new to this forum. Am looking to buy a 3.2 Elite (2001, I think) having owned a couple of senators in the past. Have seen one that is in very good condition but noticed that there was no sport mode button on the top of the auto gear selector. I haven't seem too many of this spec  knocking about and an old Carlton I had years ago I'm sure had its sport mode button down the front of the selector. All of the pics I've seen of the Omega Elite seem to have this button on top. Weer any of this model made with the button in this position?

"Hello" and Welcome to OOF  :)

I'm no expert .. but I've never seen an automatic Omega without the sports button on the top !!!  Some old ones might .. but the 3.2 is relatively young ... :(

I wonder whats happened to it !!!

As you say, early Senators had the sports button on the front of the gear selector. All the auto Vauxhalls I've been in have had a sport button, usually on top of the selector.

how many numbers do you have on your gear selector?

Should go PRND321, does it go PRND4321 by any chance?

Thanks for the replies. I'll take a closer look and make a few more enquiries before deciding what to do but discretion is the better part of valour and they'll always be another to look at (somewhere) that doesn't have a ? mark hanging over it.

That is rather odd, is it advertised online? Do you have a link to it?
All 3.2's I've driven, or seen always have the 'S' button...whether that be an Elite version or ex police, as far as I know, no facelift auto Omega's are missing the 'S' button, even the entry level 2.2 GLS auto has the 'S' button.

AFAIK all Vauxhall's (proper) 4 speed autos have a sport button, it doesn't need to be an Omega. SWMBO's auto Astra had it, as did her parent's auto Vauxhall

You're on the wrong track - 5 speed box only fitted to Y25DT, never to any V6.

Rumors of very late 3.2's not correct then?

Nope.  Only Y25DT (as it needs higher torque, and also the crap power delivery from that unit requires quite short gears).

Could it be that the 'S' has worn off with wear and tear meaning it's not easily visable?? Just a thought.

think i've been using my S more than the previous owner. S was unnarked in 69k and clicked nicely when pressed.

20k later its half way to being rubbed off and alomost silent. :(

What a Prize Twonk I am. The suggestion that the S may have rubbed was correct. The cars not local to me but one of my mates took a look this evening and has reported back that is does have the sport function button and it is a conventional PRND321 config with snow mode button to one side.
Test drive tomorrow. I hope it drives as well as it looks. 70k miles and full vauxhall history. Sorry for the confusion and thanks to all for the feedback and comments. Hopefully my future posts won't be quite as pointless.

Sounds nice.  :y

Bear in mind it's due a cam belt change in 10k miles - good negotiating point!

Also, look for evidence that a belt and tensioner change was carried out at 40k otherwise it's very overdue! Some dealers don't appear to have got the message that the cam belt interval is 40k miles.

5-speed auto was fitted to the latest Opel Omegas with 3,2 engine. The selector goes PRND432 on those models, as well as on the 5-speed diesels. Different box though in all these examples.

But it appears that only continental Europe got that option, and the UK had to make do with 4 speed auto's  :(  :(

Seems so, but then again, if you could source a suitable 5-speed box it should be a straight swap  :) But they seem to be quite rare, how do you folks put it, "as hane's teeth" or "as rocking horse poo"  :D
