hi all,
i have replaced both wishbones and now seems to be a metal sound knocking from both sides, i did notice a slight knocking after having the tracking done 3 weeks ago, but now seems to be even louder after doing the wishbones.
drop links look nearly new but have ordered a new pair to replace anyway.
been under and checked everything is tight and it is. so really stumped now.
so if anyone who may know what it might be could let me know i would be very gratefull.
thanks rob
-
did you change the droplinks also?
-
how did you torque the bolts? and how tight?
-
did you change the droplinks also?
no not changed yet but look quite new, i have ordered a new pair,
torqued as per haynes 89lb then 30 degrees then 15 degrees maybe a touch more.
could i have damaged any sort of top bearing bush in the shocker ? had to keep pulling them one way or another to get clearance to insert new wishbones etc.
thanks rob

nah top mount will take that all day long, it takes the weight of the car, although there has been one member i can think of who changed the top mount due to knocking.
Drop links are by far the most common cause but...
if the knocking appeared directly after fitting wishbones and was fine before hand i would be re torquing the bolts and checking they are all tight. From my very poor memory your figures sound low to me, could allow the bush to slip round and graunch in the bracket.
The guide needs an update, the bolts should be tightened with car on the floor suspension loaded to avoid early failure. Torque settings are something like 120nm then angle tighten 30° then 15° or similar...?
However, if the knock has gradually got worse regaurdless of the work and is worst when the car is level and not pitched in a corner then sounds like drop links to me.
-
hi, i have rechecked the bolts and got a long bar on the socket and tightned then up more, but 120nm is 89lb or there about, damm sure not loose now but still the same, when i pull twist or tug the droplinks there is not a slightest noise or movement and as i say they look fairly new, but new ones will cancel them out anyway,
this noise both sides sounds like low thudding noise like heavy box section knocking etc and can be felt through foot wells both sides, seemed very quiet on motorway today but once back on A5 into Cannock you could hear it again, i have tried yanking steering left then right can't seem to repeat it, but over bumps or uneven roads then it seems worse, tried even pulling off braking then pulling off again, this did repeat it but far less and quieter,
it is so weird and can't be heard with radio on normal to loud lol
are there any bushes from engine cradle to chassis?
but remember this noise was more noticable once i had the tracking set 3 weeks ago, so may go back and get them to check it, i know it will be out after fitting wishbones and has seemed to moved the level of the steering wheel from down right slightly to up right off level slightly now.
hope they tightned the track rod ends up when they set it :-/

As the noise was there prior to changing wishbones I would change drop links first - cheap and easy job :y
At least that takes them out of the equation!!
-
as dbug says.
noises are a bugger to describe but purely on failure rate alone its worth doing drop links, cheap and easy first.
Also should mention that camber WILL need sorting as well, most tracking places dont have that capabilitie making them useless for omega set up. google wheels in motion asap before the tyres get scrubed iriversably. hth

wishbones have deff moved my steering wheel anti clockwise about 1" - 1.5" only paid to have tracked 3 week ago, may ask them to check it as not happy with it lol ;)
so waiting on droplinks now maybe 2 days max to arrive.
drives great on motorway no probs no wandering hardly any noise, mainly bck on my estate etc i can hear the thudding.
although mine look very new, rang my mate the previous owner up until xmas eve when i got it off him and he said he never changed them, so strong chance they are stuffed.
will update as soon as fitted new one thanks all.

Mine looked ok but knocked over rough roads on offside - new drop links cured :y
-
What make of wishbones to you use ? and where did you buy them from ??curious as may need a pair in not too distant future and dealers prices are quite scarry, although have read numerous posts about some with quality issues.

http://www.generaltraffic.co.uk/
i got them for trade £20 + vodka and tonic each
part numbers i think were sa22 and sa23 if i''m correct, would need to check receipt.
could not afford vx discs and pads so had no option to go for theirs too, discs and pads for front £66 inc
got a few branches mainly staffordshire and northern areas,
normally got what ever you want within reason.
also turns out my mate DID replace the anti roll bar links both sides, so hoping they either failed or i damaged them jacking up the hubs to get the bottom ball joint back in the hub, shoud have taken the droplinks off one end first,
never mind will see when new ones arrive.
-
Sounds like very good prices, pity it is at the other end of the country to me and with postage, assuming they offered it,would then not be so good.
Best of luck with the droplinks...hope that cures the noise.

is there not a sleave\collar for the big bush you need to buy that goes in the hole the bolt goes through to take up the slack.
I had a similar thing on a vectra where i forgot to fit the collar
-
no idea mate which bush horizontal front or vertical rear?
anyone else confirm this thought please?
-
Did you tighten the wishbones up with the weight back on them ??? If you don't then the bushes are in the "wrong" set once the weight is down.
Way I did it was to just nip the bolts, drop the car down and stick toolboxes/axle stands/jack/SWTSMBO in the car. Then reaching under tighten as hard as I reasonably could given the limited access. Then relift the car onto the stands and tighten properly with the torque wrench.
Mr Haynes says 120 Nm then 30 degrees then 15 degrees :y :y :y

tightened mine on stands as all others i have done over the years without issue, this noise is deff like something loose, like wheels loose without the wobble, wheel bearings looses without the shake, same for trackrod ends without play, it is sooooo weird,
checked old wishbones and no sleeve in them and look the same holes as new one that went on, if i remember there was no play in bolts what so ever.
will no more when drop links fitted then may have to loosen the wishbones bolts again and try as you said.
thanks all

nah, bolt goes straight through the bush in wishbone.

update, well i would not have believed that noise was the drop links, but did find nearside was loose compared to offside, new links fitted and job done, NO NOISE lol :y :y :y
thanks all you rock yet again
