Title: LED replacement bulbs
Post by: ianu on 31 October 2009, 20:57:09
Hi all,
Has anyone here done the rounds with LED replacements for the following bulbs:
Front Sidelight x2, Indicators x4 + flasher can replacement, Reverse lights x2, Rear Fog x2.
Any recommendations on what's best for some or all would be much appreciated.
It'll be for a f/l 2.6 Elite saloon.

Thanks
Ian.

Whats the motivation? I have had my facelift for almost 5 years, in that time only 1 bulb has blown!

Good for front side lights but not so good for any other outside  lights ok facing the bulb but you loose the brightness from the side

Not sure anyone has to be honest.

You'd need to ensure the check control is still happy, and not sure if you'd need to do anything about difusing the normally very direction LEDs in the rear lights...

Some of the LEDs in use in yacht are worth a look.  Good quality and not focused in one direction (unless you want them to be)

Check online chandlers :y

I will admit to using "Snazzy blue effect" sidelights, my old ones looked yellow next to Xenons. Other than that all mine are original equipment. I am tempted by brake lights, I can see the advantage, faster warning of braking to the car behind has to be a good thing.

Which wont pass the MOT.

My Elite has them in, only reason they are still there is I am too lazy to change them.  Was told by the MOT tester they normally dont pass them, but he let me off coz i told him I dont drive the car at night.   ::)

I've got them on mine and the MOTer didn't even mention them :-?.

LED side lights give a brighter light, but they don't emit light towards the reflector. Changed mine back to standard.  Chavvy "boy racer" look.

They didnt on mine last year, but made a point of mentioning them this year.  Never said a word about the air freshner though.  ::)

You are talking milliseconds, and while some human brains are quicker than others by milliseconds, the right leg ain't.

I have allsorts od bulbs kicking about including some LED brake bulbs - tried one in the MV6 and the brakelight out warning came up.
Dunno if pre-face would have the same issue?

Thanks all - I agree you need to be careful about the directional capability - but I know some of the bulbs have a 'tower' design which gives a near 360 spread. I wondered if anyone had had any problems with the correct bayonet fitting ?
I know for the indicators (orange bulb) the pins are offset around the circumference and the flasher can would also need replacing. All the clear white bulbs seem to be standard opposite offset or straight bayonet.
The front sidelights do look weak next to the xenons - I'll try a pair of 9 led tower and let you know.

Cheers
Ian.

I usually fit 12LED w5w sidelights to my cars-was due to get round to the Omega this weekend.  I am expecting a "bulb out" message issue though as they use less power than standard bulbs.  Will let you know-may not be an issue.

You can buy "no fault/error code" LED bulbs off ebay though  :y

If they are the right bulb for the app, they can look nice-but it is very easy to order wrong type which do not shine at reflector and can only be seen from dead in front.  Trail and error-and worth buying better quality as in my experience the LEDs go out one by one in cheap bulbs and last only a few months.

I don't think the front side-lights (the 501's) give a fault
warning - i just replaced 1 'cos i SAW it was out but
no message ! (and in handbook the Side-lights aren't
listed)

Do those 'tower' ones go into the push-fit hole ??

http://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/501-Long-19-LED-Extreme-Power-2W-360-degree.html

I really don't like the pissy look of the sides when the
Xenons are on  :(

What about those new Halogen 5w ?? are they REALLY
Halogen or just 'Blue' ones ??
http://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/501-W5W-Osram-Halogen-Cool-Blue-Sidelights.html

I know the little capped 10w ones in the Mercs/Alfas
ARE Halogen - they're REALLY bright ! !

What is the fascination of LED bulbs...  whenever I am behind a car that uses them, all I see is the lights dancing over the road and surrounding area whenever I check the mirrors, speedo, etc...

If they affect me like that, how many others do they affect in the same way and really are they safe due to their "side effects"...

They are modulated very slowly on some cars - for no apparent reason. I hate them too. However, that is a function of the control electronics and an aftermarket LED bulb won't do it. Still can't see the point, TBH.

Keep seeing loads of cars, trucks, etc. showing blue light. That's just providing the Police the perfect excuse, should they need it, to pull you over.

Standard w5w sides look old and yellow next to HID/Xenons or upgrade bulbs-but there is a fine line between matching these and being chavvy  :y

I only started using LED sides when I started using upgrades bulbs which gave a purer white light and made the sides look nasty.

Wouldn't ever use blue bulbs, mind  :(

NAH, had "blue" bulbs . . . first off normal 55/60 watts =
DULLER (because obviously had duller BLUE glass !)
THEN found some 100w blues but even THEY only seemed
to give about SAME as the normal 60w's  >:(

Only want LED's (or Halogens ??) for the VERY 'orrible sides
at front . . . . .they're embarrassing ! ! :-[

Quite fancy the new extra bright Main Bulbs too (to try to
match the Xenon Dips a bit ?) the ~70% brighter ones from
Phillips/Osram etc ???

Have now fitted LED sidelights, Osram Nightbreaker headlight bulbs and Philips Xtreme main beam.

Noticeably brighter but my headlight inners are duff-awaiting replacement.

LEDs do look white and match the super-bright bulbs well, making the whole front look more modern.

Standard W5W sides look so dull-I don't like chavvy lights, but the LED sides (white) are a vast improvement on the standard ones.

Will post photos when the headlight units are repaired, replaced or adjusted.

Look good already  :y

OOOH !

Any chance of quick piccy as they ARE ??
(I'll make allowance for the dodgy headlights ;))

What sort of LEDs ? the simple smaller ones
or the 'tower' multi or 360 ones ?

Now up and running, had posted they were 12 LEDs, but mistaken-have used those before, but these are 6LEDs in clean white-look nice and fresh without being chavvy.

Photos to come...
