Post by: stevenpc on 01 March 2010, 11:06:48
having troble with auto in 2.5td car,car is stuck in top gear but there are no faults showing on the diagnostics could there still be an electrical fault, also have a spare gearbox but just took of the small sump and found plastic washer inside i presume that would mean there is trouble there?

Failure of the plastic thrust washer is a common problem, unfortunately. :'( It can lead to swift failure of the gearbox itself.

The AR25 gearboxes fitted to the 2.5TD are regarded as being a bit weak for that engine and aren't that long-lived in any case. If the engine is chipped it will destroy them very quickly.

Changing the box for the stronger AR35 type from a 3.0 / 3.2 V6 is a popular cure for that issue.

However, it does sound like you have an electrical issue as well. :-/

In that case the ECU probably has faults stored. Next step would be to get it to someone  with a Tech 2 to see what's going on. However, if you have found a broken thrust washer I would expect mechanical problems to occur, if they haven't already started.

broken washer was in my spare box so wont use it! its not broken in the one currently in car so from what you are saying my first step is diagnostics, see what the codes are and check the oil levelas i know my mecanic just put fresh4.4 litres into the sump without the car running this seems to be the wrong way

Hi
If your mechanic does not know that the engine MUST be running when checking/topping up the gearbox oil, then I would change your mechanic for one that knows what he is doing!  On every automatic that I have ever owned it has always been necessary to run the engine while checking g/box level.
