Title: Something Wrong with the steering
Post by: garbage456 on 23 February 2010, 15:30:11
I had the tracking done a few weeks ago, checked all the tyre pressures but there is just something wrong with the steering, hard to explain, it is easily driveable, but the worst time was when I had to brake quite hard, and it felt like the car wanted to go left and right.
(i dont think its the brakes btw as its when it cruising as well)
any ideas?

probably usual set up issues, uneven tyre wear, camber settings, failed wishbones bushes all conspire to destroy omega handling.

How are the tyres wearing? pay special ettention to the inside edges.

Steering idler also may come into it but i've no experience with that failure.

When I first had my saloon the car tended to wander (tramline). Thought it maybe the steering idler as noted from various threads about it on here.
So I ordered one £30 ebay. Now before it came I thought I'd try moving the tyres front to back.
Problem solved it was the crappy Avons on the front that was causing the wandering. They have a different tread pattern than those of the Nexon which are now on the front.
I still fitted the idler, and that took away the slight pulling to the left that was still present.
Feels good now and runs true on any road surface.
Don't discount other items that may have worn like wishbones and camber adjustment, but certainly look at your tyres and idler first.

Definately sounds like worn wishbones to me ... just had the same...
To test put the handbrake on and push the front wheels backwards quite hard ... if it moves you have worn bushes in the wishbones

the insides were worn when i got the car, due to camber i think it was (it was sorted out on the tracking check anyway)
