I've always been a bit confused about how my g/f's 2.0 takes less oil than Haynes reckons it should on an oil + filter change.
Any of you guys heard about a Vx error around 95/96 resulting in some x20xevs getting the wrong level markings on the dipstick?
Seen a couple of foreign forum references to different dipstick part numbers 90 499 304, and 90 571 124. Also a thread on VxON talking about a recall relating to this.
If I said that our engine number is 141520XX can anyone tell me whether the first part number or the second part number is the right dipstick. It currently has the first number 90 499 304.

astras have dif dipstick as it is front wheel drive, mine has allways been right, but there is a dif in level on a singel sump to a split sump, thats it really.

i wonder, re jamesv6cdx Smokey Astra, if it also works the other way round, with too short a dipstick, allowing over filling, and hence his smokey engine?

I've just been on to my local Vx, and the very helpful parts guy informs me that I have a dipstick from an early sump in a later sump. Changeover was at engine number 1414..... ::)
So I've got the correct dipstick coming, which is apparently 90 528 436.
I'll post up a comparitive picture when I get it.
I can only presume some careless/daft previous owner lost the dipstick and replaced it from a scrapper with the wrong one. Cheers! :(

Well I got the new dipstick yesterday, but I'm still mighty confused...
Old dipstick 90 499 304 against a tape measure:

New dipstick 90 528 436 against tape measure:

As you can see, rather than being shorter - with respect to the min/max marks - the new one is longer, so would result in even less oil in the sump if I filled it to the max. mark.
Now I've only ever seen the sump on our car, so I don't know whether it's the newer or older variant.
Can anyone tell me from this pic:

I'd be most grateful to any owner who has a sump the same as this one on their x20xev, if they could put a tape measure to their dipstick for comparison. :) ;)

yours is the long type, from your pick as split sump is not as low as that to the ground, and yours is metal as mine is alloy. also looks a cheap make, had one like that a few years ago on another car and it melted,.. on a 600mile round trip. there is a 2inch gap from bottom end to dip stick tip, :y

2. What melted? A sump? :o
3. A 2" gap from where?
Pretty please, someone with a sump like mine at least tell me the part number on the handle bit of their dipstick. ;D :D

there is a 3inch gap from the metal case bottom in side to the tip of the dipstick when it is in, if you had a flex metal rod pit in the dipstick hole and take off 3inch, then the exact size will be from that gap to the top of the dipstick hole, the 1inch extra is the dead bottom, then min to max that is on the dip stick.
