I asked for some advice several days ago on the problems I have had after an engine swap in my 1998 MV6. As I said it runs but won't tick over (mis-fires and splutters at low speed) but sounds ok above 1500-2000 rpm. I was advised it could be the plug leads incorrect which are ok on the engine but as I carried over my DIS pack with leads attached I assume they are ok, do the order vary between models? The order is different to the diagrams sent to me but my DIS is different as it is horizontally mounted with the plug on the top, I assume that it is marked with the correct cylinder numbers which I will have to remove it next to check on the order of the leads.
I had some problems with the crank position sensor having a different plug lead to my loom so I swapped it from the old engine and when I diconnect the sensor the engine will not start which to me implys the sensor most be working.
I was advised to blank off the EGR valve as it could be that but that made no difference. I have checked the VAC pipes and wiring and it all seams to be correct so any advice would be greatly appreciated as I am totally baffled.

A faulty crank sensor could still allow the engine to run; mine did, although not very well.
I could be wrong but I always thought that problems at low revs could be the idle air control valve. It's easy to get to so worth a check.
I missed your other post days ago. Did you check for fault codes?
-
Not checked for fault codes yet as I was hoping it would be a simple fix through something I had done wrong.
-
Hopefully it's a simple fix!
Did the new engine run ok in its previous car?
Going back to the HT leads; it could be these but wouldn't an incorrect firing order cause problems throughout the whole rev range?
It only takes a few minutes to do the paperclip test. If there are any codes stored I wouldn't be surprised if 19 (crank sensor) crops up.

I've seen the paper clip test notes for the codes so I will try that next. Thanks for the advice.

Paper clip test gave codes 59 & 73 (inlet manifold valve 1 & Air Flow Sensor) but as these were from the orignal engine I asume they are ok. Also the englne fault light is not lite up on the dash.
