After much advise was offered, have done this so far, but still no heater. Can anybody tell me where to go next??
Ran engine with no top on expansion tank, squeezing air from hoses, then put flusher into engine, drained and refilled, pulled vacuum pipe from HBV and blocked end, pipes to matrix warm, but don't appear to have a lot of pressure of water, reset heater unit buttons, and finally bought new thermostat and water pump to fit as last resort. haven't disconnected matrix and put water hose through it yet, will do tomorrow. Is changing the HBV a ball ache, and will it do any good? is it expensive?###Pi55ed off now.### :'( :'(

The HBV isn't in the best of locations but I had no trouble with it when I removed the scuttle and wiper motor and linkage. Of course, removing the plenum and probably inlet manifold would help too.
I got one from a dealer for about £30.

I'd go for disconnecting the heater hoses at the bulkhead and use your garden hose to flush the matrix through.
I suppose it's possible (assuming you have climate control) that the motor to control the air mix is faulty or the flap is jammed. Is it cold on both driver and passenger sides?

if you set the temp to HI do you then get hot air out ? If so then its probably an issue with the sampling unit.

Good point, I'd forgotten that one. The sampling fan can pack up.

Temp on both sides set to HI and HBV vacuum pipe blocked off. pipes to matrix warm, but do not appear to have much pressure to them. What's a sampling fan for???
-
If you look between the fan and direction controls you'll see some thin slats, behind this there's a little fan that extracts air from the cabin to the climate control temp sensor.
-
It samples the interior temperature and adjusts the hot or cold air accordingly

Reckon I'm gonna do a clean sweep, and replace the HBV, water pump, thermostat, and flush the matrix all at the :(same time. Then, if STILL no heater, can only be the sampling fan..............................

Or a problem with the motor that moves the air mix flap.

So much it COULD be...........................
Getting depressed now, the PO said it was "just a little problem with an air lock in the water system stopping the heater from working properly" when I bought it!!
Still, paid cheap money, so must expect a little effort to make it 100%....................(tries to convince himself)
Onward and Upward!! :)

When you say warm, is that exactly what you mean cos I'd say they should be roasting when engine up to temp.
