Title: Steering problem into tight right handers..
Post by: DaveBrunel on 16 March 2010, 16:59:17
V reg 3.0 Elite - Ive noticed lately that if I push it fairly hard into a right hander/roundabout, on a tight lock, the car reaches the stage where it will suddenly steer into the corner a bit more, and I have to correct by easing off the steering a little. I had some cheap tyres fitted recently, but had the tracking done etc, and in a straight line it is fine - ie no more wandering about on white lines and cambers...

I had this problem and it turned out to be worn wishbone bushes.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Is it a good idea to just replace the bushes, or should I consider a pair of wishbones complete, less than £40 on ebay? It looks like it would be easier to replace them whole rather than just the bushes..

Hi Dave,

I am going to replace my front wishbones next week (Lemforder from autovaux £62) and will have the original wishbones which you could put bushes into if your interested? I would only want a little bit of spending money for them.

I also live in Maidenhead so drop off would not be a problem.

Replacing the bushes is a difficult job even with right tools, besides the arms are often corroded anyway.  Best to use new.  The ones off ebay are fine although it is the tightening sequence which is important!  Check in the Maint guides :y

Also I find that to replace the offside vertical bolt it is easier to fit using a length of stiff wire (i used a wire coathanger) shaped to fit the bolt and then dropped into place.  Otherwise you may be searching around the subframe for dropped bolts.

The job can be fiddly so be prepared for plenty of tea breaks and keep sammy away  ;D
