I've removed the tuning chip from my tractor, it's back to normal now.
Reason..........fuel economy really.
Getting a bit p*ssed off with less mpg despite what others say about it improvement it gives, not on mine.
Anyway my findings are, obviously less grunt and power on tap, but it's not as bad as I thought it would be.
Improvements.... seems smoother on acceleration, no stuttering at around 30-35mph and again at 45-50, which I had with the other chip fitted.
And the best improvement is I've got my display telling me the right figures eg consumption, range etc.
And I know it will give me more mpg back to standard, should read something like 32-34+mpg, rather less I'm afraid with the other chip fitted. :(

thats odd, usually chipping gets better mpg :-/

Forgot to say......
Also the black smoke I used to get on hard acceleration has almost disappeared, just a very slight amount now :y hardly noticeable.

Using decent fuel from BP/Shell really reduces smoke :y

#if yours is a 427 variant Mick there are 2 or 3 other chips that give less smoke and similar gains in power!! its all down to personal preference!! :y

Tried everything..Total, BP, Shell, Esso even the more expensive stuff at the likes of the big ones mentioned above, no difference......Worst being being Sainsburys city diesel, well the smoke cloud from that was unreal.
Mainly use Asda diesel no worse than the big well known brands :y
BTW I've got the same stuff in now as was in before I changed the chip over. Instant result, virtually no smoke :y

Yes that's what my MID says, but it tells lies!!!

My latest '99 mini-facelift tractor's unchipped, and I'm gonna leave it that way.
No more black smoke, and runs like a dream.
It's predecessor, a '98 mini-facelift remains chipped.
Some black smoke on initial acceleration, though reduces significantly when run on 'proper' Shell fuel.

I've noticed that since I gave it the 'Diesel Magic' treatment mine does not appear to smoke either.

wondering if something more fundamentally wrong with chip, particularly with the stuttering? Wonder if the poor mpg was related.
Contact the guy again, I'm sure he could have some options...

Mine was the same, though the stuttering at around 1500 RPM seemed to cure itself.
Don't think that 'chipped' fuel economy was noticeable either. Possibly a slight improvement, but that was about it.

Yep the stuttering did sought of improve after I gave it the Diesel Magic when renewing the filter this time, but not gone altogether. Now last year I did the same and it went completely after a dose of above in the filter. But it's deffo worse MPG with the chip fitted, I'd say -5 MPG roughly.
So I will see how it runs and what MPG figures it gives me, but that will be next week now as I will not be using it until then. Will contact the guy again to see what he says about other chips.
Thanks all :y

Had a drive down to Wiltshire today in the TD.
Put the same amount of diesel in as I normally do for this trip. Got quite a bit left, and MID is showing 43mpg. That's cruise set at 70mph on the M/way some A roads at 50/60 were poss. On the way back cruise set at 70 but got fed up so it was clear so a little bit more in places but don't like to say. Anyway if the chip was still in I guess it would have been somewhere in the region of 35mpg, lower poss with giving it a bit of wellie on the way back.
Really is running smooth at the moment, a great cruiser. :y
The chip stays out :(

my td is a auto unchipped(with some under lying problems) i find when the mpg starts to drop i change the fuel filter ive tipped out the filter in a white pale and noticed the fuel was black.
i'm changing fuel filter about every 5 weeks and the fuel itself is coming from various petrol stations. :-/ :-?

You don't want to chip an auto, will destroy the gearbox

Black fuel?
Wondering if the hoses within the tank are beginning to break down, or possibly the tank needs a drain/clean-out, (or both).

Got Mrs Sethsmate's permission to use the latest (unchipped) tractor for a run up to Newent yesterday evening.
This was a brilliant opportunity to assess it on a wide variety of roads and driving conditions.
Before setting off, the tank was meticulously brimmed at a local filling station with 'proper' Esso diesel.
A circular route was taken:
Outward with long undulating climbs from the valleys, up-hill-down-dale across the Heads of the Valleys, then motorway-like cruising along the A40 and M50, followed by around 6 miles of good A/B class country roads.
Return was via the M50, A40/A449, M4, then good-ish A/B roads back up the valleys with some stop/start driving. Also included a lengthy roadworks diversion with stop/starts through Newport.
Meticulously re-brimmed the tank on return.
So, it had a fair ragging all evening, and took everything that was (responsibly) thrown at it, in it's stride. This included a 100mph burst on a deserted motorway, and generally 80mph effortless cruising.
The tractor returned 35.7 mpg for the near 160-mile jaunt.
There you have it folks, there's to be no chipping done on this one.
Oh, and I enjoyed every second of the trip, and inside she was as silent as a monastery!

How do I identify my variant?
Look on the back/front of your ECU and there will be a Bosch number, the 427 relates to the last 3 digits of this number.
Mine is a 427. I have now lowered myself to the depths of constantly tearing the arse off the car, black smoke galore, stuttering at 1500rpm, and absolutely massacred clutch.... but I wouldn't change a thing about it and it still fetches a minimum of 5 mpg more than without!?
I have grown to not even notice the side effects now. Poor thing has done 198k and hasn't got much left in her so she may as well enjoy herself.

Much obliged, all I have to do now is find the ECU! :y
