Title: Sudden misfire then loads of exhaust white smoke
Post by: Bionic on 26 March 2010, 02:32:29
S**t,
Just got it running great and then while out for a paper it started to misfire and now there is loads of white smoke from the exhaust under load.
It smells a little of coolant when the heaters are on too. I have already changed the HBV, heater matrix and the main coolant radiator.
Is this what I think it is, the head gasket, or can there be some other cause?
Might I need Darth Loo Knee or a kindred spirit?

... any water in the oil, mayo on the dipstick?

Is the coolant system overpressurising? Bubbles in the Expansion tank? Radiator hoses rock hard when hot? Does the coolant in the tank smell of exhaust gas or petrol?
Take out the plugs and shine a torch into the cylinders, is there any liquid there? Tape a piece of kitchen/bog roll to a stick or similar, dip into the cylinder/s after the car has been stood (overnight if possible) & check the smell of any wetness on the paper. HTH ;)

There is a smell of petrol in the header tank, no more mayo in oil filler neck than usual (in fact there is less)
and there is no contamination of the oil showing on the dipstick.
The way it 'hydraulicked' this morning when turned over tells me that there is a hell of a lot of water in the bores too. After topping up the header tank then turning it over also resulted in a fine geyser of water from its top, just like a volcano! Near 40 years as a mechy gave me that knowledge.
Definitely head gasket/s for sure cos there are no water leaks anywhere else. Must admit though, I have never come across one so bad............

The shining White Knight is coming to the rescue!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have arranged for Darth Loo Knee to pop over and do the business on Monday. Gotto give it to the man, he don't mess about and could not be any more helpful. Better get some extra grog and grub in!

I am certain, considering that I am not prejudicial in any way, that he will not have taken any offence as I used the term quite literally as being my 'saviour' from a serious predicament. I shall ask him when he arrives on Monday morning. I have already spoken to him on the phone to arrange things and as he would have read my comments and said nothing he obviously took no offence at all. Anyway who cares about his origins - as long as he is one of the best at what he does I hope many more use his services.

Star Wars eh! Yep - got the full dvd set and they call my dog Zoltan too! He is from the dark side going grey................................. See you Monday, kettle should be boiled by then.
Just finished washing the engine bay so you can stay cleanish. No doubt some pee will be taken about that too. Oh yeah.. I do have some pink rags but no Rick Astley (Cris might have though).

Forgive my advanced age and knackered legs but Basshunter is more my style. Either that or a nice bit of boghopper!

Sounds like a depressingly familiar list of things building up to/caused by HG trouble.  :'(

As for Rick Astley, I think I'd rather have an epileptic hedgehog shoved up my bum than listen to him.  ;D

OUCH  :D...........what is it cruelty to hedgehog week :'(? Hope you never need him to do something for you cos his price may well be influenced by that. I have my trusty old earplugs anyway and if that don't work then its the old bluetac or I could drown it out with Basshunter.
Better idea.  :y ;D ;D I will sing along to it and that will definitely make him put Rick to bed.
As for the job, at least it will be done right with genuine bits and be back to being reliable. Freekin stranded till then. :-[
