http://www.autocheck.co.uk/write-off-categories.html and I believe it can affect the car's future value. Some insurance companies can be funny about insuring a cat c/d write off.

as far as im aware only cat a and b should not be put back on the roads as they are considered not repairable. Cat c and d are only written off because the repair costs outweigh the vehicles value. this is normally due to high labour costs and new expensive parts. Good 2nd hand panels and doing most repair work yourself make these vehicles viable again. also there is a scheme where you can get all repaired vehicles inspected and given a insurance approved bill of health which will remove it from write off list.

Admiral are the pits. You will find that the companies who advertise heavily are usually not good value for money because they have to pay for the high profile, high intensity and regular adverts, usually on tv and we all know how expensive that is!
Do as I did vote with your feet and go elsewhere!
Give the COOP a try, you may find their policy cover and cost is well lower than most for the same level of cover. I did and pay near to 300 quid less now.

We had already done so before we were paid out for the car. SWMBO had been driven into abou a fortnight befoe Admiral's policy ran out. I phoned them to ask about something to be told that they deemed the car an ecomonical write off .... 'and by the way you're now not insured, as we don't insure write offs' The courtesy car covered her for a coupe of weeks. :y
i have to say though, that Admiral were very good at paying out, we got what I thought was a very reasonable payout for her car, the second offer. It would have been rude to accept their first ;D

i was insured with admiral until my last 3.0L went up in smoke
(self combustion). took no end of calls to sort out the claim and retain the salvage. then on renewal the uped the premium to £690.was £220 fully comp. goodbye. and the best bit was they sent me a questionare asking why i wasnt renewing ;D ;D simples :)

Also cat c`s have to go to a VOSA testing station so the work carried out can be assessed before it`s let back n the road . I had a cat c corsa once i bought cheap( rear end damage) did all the work booked it in the gut who checked it out basiclly said he was looking to make sure the car was what the vin nmber said it was and wasn`t 2 cars joined together. Cat d can just be mot`ed as normal no extra checks.
