Is there some magic trick to get the caliper piston back? I know on audis there is a thread you have to screw it back onto.
I am currently in the process of changing the front discs nd the caliper wont budge! Is it caliper off and in the vice time?

I use a LARGE pair of plumbing pliers, there is a "flat" on the back of the caliper, and the pliers fit there nicely, other jaw goes right across both sides of the piston to keep it flat ... firm squeeze and the piston slides in nicely .. :)

Flat bar against the old pad works for me. Have you tried loosening bleed nipple slightly

Open the bleed nipple and squeeze the piston in.
No special trick......

Loosen bleed nipple - fit tube onto nipple, other end into jar with fluid in (as if bleeding).
Piston should push back easily (use large pliers or g-clamp + wood).

sorted, used a frame box vice ratchet thing :y

Just did mine literally ten minutes ago... great fun putting my wheel back on in the dark... I used a piece of 5" X 1" Hardwood placed over the piston, and levered against that, worked a treat for me.

works like a dream and you know your pushing the piston in nice and square as not to damage the seals

works like a dream and you know your pushing the piston in nice and square as not to damage the seals
they are a handy tool for general work, but really should not be needed on this car. If its that much trouble to push back in on the Omega theres sumat wrong ime.

ah ok, i didnt mean justfor omegas, theres one in my toolbox and i use it on everything and i like tools that are simple,do the job and work everytime ;)

A word of caution.
IF you force brake pistons in without opening the bleed nipple, you run the risk of inverting the master cylidner seals and amybe getting air into the ABS modulator.
If you open the bleed nipple....the force required is minimal!

I clamp the flexi brake hose, open the bleed nipple and just push the caliper piston in with a screwdriver - all the old brake fluid is then expelled :y

goes without saying, the amount of people who must bugger their master cylinder......................

Ive never loosened the bleed nipples on calipers whilst winding them back, and i do them pretty often. Usually whip the cap off the reservoir.

i use big pair of grips to push the caliper back in, needs a bit of effort (especially from me) ::)

ive seen it happen twice, once on a vito and once on a frontera........ why run the risk? its freeto loosen the bleed nipple, howmuch is a master cylinder?

id never heard of it unitl last year when i was up the local garage for a brew and a natter, and someone come in with the frontera, 've just changed my pads and now the brakes are very bad' blown master cylinder, then no more than two weeks later a mate changed the pads on his vito and blew his seals too.... ive never done it personally but im not taking the risk :y
