Dads elite 3.0 is using some water about a litre a day 10 miles max
every other day the temperature goes into the red
when car is cooled down there is no coolant in the resivoir
there is a lot of pressure in the cooling resivoir even if left for a couple of hours
it has a slight misfire
on checking the plugs number six has what looks like rust on the electrode the ceramic is rusty brown in colour all the other plugs are fine
ther is no oil in the water or water in the oil
and no leaks
hbv changed last week
does that sound like head gasket is going?
-
Is it an MY1998 by any chance?
-
Do a compression test. Loss of water could be number of things, oil cooler plate, thermostat? Ceramic of plug could be because water off scuttle is droppin into it (especially number 6 plug), this could also be causing the misfire.
A compression test will give you a better idea if it is the HG :y

amount of coolant lost (litre/day) is too much for normal leaks and must be visible.. if not, HG seems to be #1 in the list.. have a compression test imo..

close 1999

sorry meant the bit of ceramic at the end of the plug between the electrodes

It is showing all the characteristics of a H/G failure on the water jacket of the affected plugs cylinder. :(
-
must be head gaskets on their way out month
....me too
the rough idle kinda gives it away, as does the back pressure in the header tank.

what sort of price can he expect to pay to have it done
or could i do it myself i'm handy with the spanners but have not really worked on the GM v6 only done a cambelt change and that was only last week
if i can do it myself do i just do the side that is gone or both side's
-
both sides..
-
dad just phoned car is now leaking water from the rad
could the build up of pressure cause the rad to split?

Yep, and the heater matrix, if you're really unlucky... ::)

Not much more work than a cambelt
Passenger head off, coolant pipe off, drivers head off, and then refit the driver head first
