I'm going to have a shot at replacing the thermostat on my Y26SE V6 tomorrow.
I've clued myself up from the maintenance guide on the forum.
My shopping list is: link pipe seal(s), new A/F and the thermostat itself, but do I need to replace the thermostat housing as well? (or does it come as a complete unit?)
Many thanks.

i would do the oil cooler at the same time too!

Thanks for the tip Matty, but crikey, I think that may be a bit too much for this weekend! I'm hoping to get the stat all sorted for Saturday evening.
And I'm having to work up enough courage to tackle that!
-
The stat comes complete with the housing. It is possibe to just change the stat but not advisable because the housing becomes worn allowing coolant past and thus a slow warm up.

Many thanks for that, Dave.

most pepople recommend getting a new transfer pipe just in case the old one gets destroyed in removal.

Indeed, don't start without one.. ::)
-
And I have a servicable spare link pipe in the garage which is in West Bridgford if you get stuck
-
Check the housing depth before you stick the new one on ..... new housings are thinner than old and require slightly shorter bolts .... if you use the original bolts and overtighten you risk major damage as the holes are "blind"

Thanks to everyone for the advice - most appreciated.
My bits will (i.e. should) arrive tomorrow AM, so I'll let you know how things go. I haven't got a transfer pipe on the way, but I might get away with it at only 34k miles on 52 reg?
Really indebted to you all for your offers of help.
Thanks again.

The commonly refereed to as 'b@stard bolt' is part of the link pipe, its on a bracket, located behind the dip stick. Take the PAS pump bracket off, and push the PAS pipe down, that gives better access.
Before you do that, wiggle the hell out of the transfer pipe so its loose on the stat.
Also worth getting a replacement link pipe as they can easily crack, if you do get it out on once piece, replace the 2 o-rings on the transfer pipe. (if you get a new pipe these o-rings come with it)

Thanks, off to wiggle

Tunnie you need to "Wiggle" the Thermostat Housing not the Transfer Pipe. Leave the Bastard Bolt in place until your sure the Thermostat Housing is loose, only then undo the Bastard Bolt :y

Have you cleaned out your heater matrix?
-
You could also have an air lock in the matrix as I have had, all you need to do is check the two hoses coming from the matrix, if the top one is hot and the bottom one is cool/cold you have an air lock. Just remove the bottom hose until the air has released.
