Title: Vibration from 45-55 mph
Post by: stereferee on 04 April 2010, 16:42:58
i have suddenly developed a vibration at the 45-55 mph range.  Before this speed and above this speed all is fine and no vibration occurs.  I have though found some play in the drivers side front wheel.  Would this be the problem?

does the vibration occur when you are braking, ie, pushing the brake pedal and slowing the car down (under braking)

no. just whilst accelerating through 45-55mph or just slowing through that range without braking.

Check around the wheels, see if it looks like you've lost a balance weight, or take the car and get the wheels re-balanced .. if only to remove them from the equation.

Also, did the tyre place check if any of the wheels were out of shape ? I had similar on my old miggy, went twice to kwik fit to get it balanced, both times they said it was fine. Then took it to my local ATS who told me straight away the wheel was oval shaped (probably from hitting a pothole).

Replaced the wheel, no more vibration.

Its worth sticking the spare on one corner at a time then going for a drive. When you get no vibration you will know which wheel needs a proper looking at.

My current miggy has had 3 new wheels in the last 3 years , I've stopped using the A422 now (potholes all along it) - no problems since.

I have one wheel thats still slightly out of shape but on the advice of WIM stuck it on the back and dont get any vibrations. But it is only very slightly mis-shapen.

50 miles avg vibration tells me still you need all 4 balance.. and as stated above you  must also check the wheel shapes .. any weight more than 20 -25 gr tells there is problem..
