Title: Alternator removal from 2.5td
Post by: age_of_generals on 14 April 2010, 13:01:08
Hi everyone,

Alternator broke, i got a replacement.  Removed the belt, tensioner pulley, little plate that forms the top alternator bolt yoke even the fuel pipe to the pump, but I just cannot get the damn thing out, have tried to twist and turn it in all sorts of directions but it won't come out.  Next thing I'm thinking is to remove the powersteerign hose (i think that is what it is) and see if that give me room. I cannot lift it up and out.  Please help.  THe tis guide said it should take an hour to removal and reinstall, I've been at it for two hours and it hasn't yet come out.

One other thing, whilst removing the fuel line fromt he pump, I managed to get some dirt into the pump, what should I do?

thanks,

Think I read on here about someone had to remove the battery, then bend the battery tray a little to ease it out.
Don't take my word for it though and start butchering the tray.
Surely there's an easier way :-?

Won't it come out from below?

Mick ;)

If no A/C, can come out forwards towards rad.

Another daft BMW design ;)

thanks chaps,

been at it a few hours, removed power steering hose banjo bolt just underneath the alternator, removed viscous fan and housing and then had to pull the power steering pipe heading towards the cooler or whatever it is near the radiator back and got the alternator out but managed to take a chunk out of the rad.  what a silly design.  you can't even drop it down and remove from underneath.

I don't think BMW designed the omega engine bay!!! There is enough room to climb into a 525 to change the oil filter & I'd say you'd get the alt out with one hand. TD now at 186K mls and the engine is not on my worry list!

A 'How to' would be helpful by the sound of it.
