Title: What gets disturbed please...
Post by: duggs on 14 April 2010, 20:11:37
...when the full set of cam gaskets get replaced.

To explain, as per my recent posts the mechanic recently changed them all...Since then I noticed a ton of oil "left" in some of the plug wells.

She's been back to them today, had all plugs removed, wells cleaned out, new plugs plonked in AND new leads and she's STILL got bad hesitation/slight misfire under load. NO codes are showing. They still have her, what on earth else could be causing the hesitation please.

That's new oil. You can't remove the cam cover without any oil that might have been there before hand can only have fallen into the top of the engine.  :y

Sounds like goosed plug leads ......probably cooked by the oil or broken when they were removed.

Measure the resistance of them, they should be between about 2K ohm and 10K ohm

They say they've now replaced all the leads and she's still doing it. Could oil in the plug holes also effect the dis pack ?

Would an air leak in and around the gaskets/plenum cause the problem and what is the lambar thing all about...could that be a cause..?

Wouldn't have done it any favours if the leads were breaking down due to being covered in oil (and they do break down if subjected to oil for long enough).

No such thing as an air leak where cam cover gaskets are concerned, although if the plenum wasn't done properly then that is another possible avenue.

The Lambda sensor measures the amount of O2 in the exhaust and sends a signal back to the ECU so it can adjust accordingly.

PS

Measuring the internal resistance of the leads won't actually tell you if they are breaking down under load.

Thank you KW.... With new plugs and leads now fitted, I've just left a message on their answering machine, suggesting they re-check the Plenum.

The DIS pack is also another possible if the original leads were breaking down due to the oil coverage.

PS

It might be an idea to have a code read, it is quite possible something else has failed at the exact time you had the work done (it's known as sods law).

Code read comes up with no codes....all seems fine ??

These ECUs have very little monitoring of the ignition side so it does point to plugs / leads / coil pack if a fault exists with no codes.

Well they'll be chuffed.  Suspect they'll be on to the coil pack tomorrow ??

Sorted !.

NOTHING to do with the cam gasket changes.

Dis pack was flubbered. Water has been dripping on it for quite some time. Core was rusted badly to one end, splitting the casing. Amazed it worked at all.
Pleased they changed the HBV now...suspect, historically the HBV was the culprit.

Might be worth a watering can over the windscreen to make sure its not seeping into the insulation under the scuttle via the wiper seals or scuttle joins.

Good point....will check that !  The damage to the dis pack looked very old though. As mentioned, the metal inside had rusted so badly that it had expanded and cracked the casing down one end.

I think thats a pretty common failure. My old one was the same, looked like rust had formed between the laminations of the coils and burst the casing as it expanded. How it gets rusty in an encapsulated unit I dont know.

Suspect the plastic can't cope because the water dripping on it is "so bloomin' hot".
