Title: 3.2 v6 cutting out
Post by: keithnic on 24 April 2010, 15:37:13
My Omega cut out a couple of times recently.  I put it to the auto electricians and they suggested a new battery.  Next day I'm driving the family to the airport to catch a flight and guess what - cuts out again after five miles.  Turns over fine, but won't start.  Luckily father-in-law comes to the rescue and gets us to the airport. Five minutes to spare, I so don't want to go through that again!

He returned to the car later and it started fine, but cut out on him after about  another five miles.  He left it for 15 mins and it started again, but this time only lasted about one mile. Its sitting at home now.

I did the paper clip test and got the following faults :-

0330 Knock sensor 2 circuit high input (Bank 2)
0430 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2)
0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

Do the symptoms ring any bells with you guys?  Can you suggest anything to investigate?

crank sensor I would have thought - same problem as I had over Christmas - changed it and no problem since - common issue on here.

The other issues on fuel efficiency are also common - many threads on subject - mine does it now and then but I ignore it when EML comes on as it happens so rarely and eml will reset after a number of starts.

I wasn't sure a 3.2 was good for 'the paper clip test', only 2.5 & 3.0 litre of the V6 engines, however you have and got a result, symptom would suggest 'crank sensor'.

Actually (and very strangely) the codes actually suggest a cam sensor but the symptoms suggest a Crank Sensor :-/ :-/

Have you done any work on the top end/had the plenum off recently?

crank sensor imo, dont always show a code, and sometimes throw other erronios codes to confuse matters.

0420 0430 normal for that engine, unrelated to symptoms, but there is guide on re siteing 2nd lambda.

Thanks very much for all the replies.  I looked at the guide to change the crankshaft.  Doesn't look too difficult or should I leave it to the professionals?  :)
