Title: Auto transmission

Hi All,

I have a 2 liter automatic mega (1997) and I have issues with the tranny (ocasionally it slips). There were no error codes, but once the transmission went into "safe" mode and the icon showed up in the middle. After restart it disappeared. We took it to for error code reading, but no error codes were stored! I would like to ask you if you can tell me that in theory when the transmission error icon comes up for how long it stores the error code? Is it possible at all it does not store a code after restart?

If you say it slips then no codes will show the only solution is to replace the box.

The tranny has been rebuilt and has half a year full guarantee. Unfortunately it seems to be an electrical problem, but not sure... I was pretty happy to see the icon coming up as I thought it will give an indication what might be wrong. But then no error code was stored which seems very strange to me?!?!

Are you using a code reader? Paper clip test only does engine codes, you'll need a proper code reader for the gearbox, and if your gearbox message has shown, it's likely there is a fault code in there.  :y

engine codes will send gearbox into limp, such as cam/crank sensor, worth getting a code reader of ebay and get them read.

Also worth checking ATF level is good  :y

Mine has done this occasionally for some time and cannot get to the bottom of it - crank sensor was changed in December and codes cleared and since then has behaved itself but I am not doing the miles in the Omega I used to. I would think about a crank sensor change if it keeps slipping as a cheaper test to renewing gearbox.

If you've changed crank sensor and checked ATF and it still does it then you may be into solenoids or ultimately gearbox change. I just have a hunch this is electrical issue.

If the icon came up then there will be a fault code....

Thanks for all the answers guys! The transmission service took it for a code reading and they say that there was no code stored, however I will take it to a different dealer and try to get the code out.

Just one addition, all solenoids are new (slip happened in the same way with the old ones) and ATF level is also correct. The slip comes occasionally around 50km/h speed, and seems to be an electrical issue as the whole tranny was taken into pieces and rebuilt.

I guess I need to find a place where they can read codes properly.  :)

hi mbraz i had a very simalar problem with my auto 2.5 td,
i also done a diagnostic check and had no codes back either,

then i droped all the oil and replaced with new plus a new fillter

it seemed like i still had the problem but then took it for a long spin and ever since it has been right (touch wood)

also dampness getting in to the 3 main loom connections also throws up auto transmition faults,
check these are secure and clean,

hope this of some use to you
