Title: play in steering
Post by: tango on 03 May 2010, 23:53:28
hi
guys quick question
i was sitting in my car earlier whilst it was started and noticed that there was some play in the steering
i  was turning it left right it it was turning abit before you get friction if you no what i mean
whats causing this
i recently replaced the steering idler with a genuine vauxhall one
could this be the reason to my car is pulling to the left whilst driving

When was the last time you had the vehicle geometry checked?

As for the free play, probably down to the steering box wanting a slight adjustment.

Did you also check steering arm and track rod ends for play, jack up front wheels and check for movement side to side :y

Get someone to feel for motion at the steering box output and the play will probably not be as bad as it seems. It's much worse when the steering is not exactly in the straight ahead position due to the design of the steering box.

thanks for the replies guys
ive had tracking done on the car at kwik fit ( i know)
however i noticed my car sometimes pulls more and sometimes its hardly noticable
i personally now think this is down to the play in the steering
how can i check the steering box
