Title: Oil sump removal
Post by: Radar on 04 May 2010, 21:17:59
I want to clean the oil pickup pipe located in the oil sump and wanted to know how to remove the oil sump.
I have a load clatter noise on cold start up which sounds like not enough oil is moving around for the first few seconds of start up and was thinking the cleaning of the pickup pipe would cure this.

Any pointers on how to do this would be appreciated. Thanks

What makes you think it's oil starvation?

I had a loud ticking noise on start up on my 2.2, went after about 10-20 secs.

Turned out to be a crack in the exhaust manifold, now sorted. :y

Just guesswork really. I had a cracked manifold on my previous omega and it made a different more metallic sound.

My thinking is if i clean the pipe it won't do any harm and if the noise is still there afterwards then at least i can eliminate it as a possible cause.

Thanks James, but can i do this by just jacking up and supporting with a couple of axle stands, and are there many bolts to undo? I don't want to take any risks.

As I said previously it is guesswork and if it is done it won't do any harm.

At one point i was thinking it was something to do with the water pump but i just don't know.

Are you sure the cold clatter isn't piston-slap or something that probably won't respond to a slightly better oil-flow?   Does it reduce with a simple oil change (as the fresh oil additives often help line the various surfaces)?

i don't know if it is piston slap. I did an oil change and it helped very slightly.

If i do clean the pickup pipe how many bolts are there to do undo - or can someone point me to a how to remove oil sump somewhere?
