I have just started to try and locate the source of the steam coming from under the bonned of my 1998 V6, and it looks like its coming from the bottom (it would be ! >:() offside hose where it joins the valve. But I'm wondering if this is just where I'm seeing the fluid.
Have been looking at the threads on this forum and have found that bypass valve problems are quite common. Could someone tell me where these usually leak from when they fail - is it from the cap at the top?, if so mine is probably ok, or does the plastic split? I'm hoping its just the hose, but I can't see any splits and the spring clip seems tight.
If the hose needs replacing is it easiest to remove or unclip the valve first as access to the hose clip seems impossible? I can feel some kind of clip that the valve slides up and down on, but can't see it (well just, with a mirror and a torch between the teeth) and can't find how to release it. Or do I have to unbolt the other end which seems equally impossible to get at.
Also, where does this lower hose go to - this runs to a pipe coming through the bulkhead - is this pipe part of the heater matrix?, and how is this end removed/ filtted? I'm not used to the kind of connection I can see and don't want to break it!
Thanks for any help offered.

sounds like the hbv. safest think to do is change the hbv before it goes as when they go they normally take the dis-pak out as well.you also have the heater hoses round the back (drivers side) as well.check they havent got a split in.
to change the hbv remove the wiper arms, then remove the scuttle panel. this gives you more room, they can be changed without removeing all this tho. :y

its usually running down from a failed join in the hbv, maybe the dealer will let you buy both and return whats not needed, or remove the scuttle for a better look engine runing.

Excuse my ignorance biggriffin, but what's the dis-pak?

the ignition coil thats located at the rear of the engine :y

The Baron got there first but yes its the Ignition Coil, the area where the spark plug leads go to at the back of the engine. Heater bypass valve failure is very common on these. Can't remember back to my 98 Elite but some of the scuttle twist screws are under windscreen rubber. No doubt someone will correct me if I'm wrong. Definately makes access better though unless you have tiny hands.
