Title: Coolant Level Message
Post by: Gascon on 27 August 2007, 14:24:00
Omega 2.2 cd 2001
I get coolant level Message on Display. After having a look at it, I have come to the conclusion that the sensor can not be taken out and the header tank bottle needs replacing as a unit. I wonder if any of you guys can confirm this.
Thank you
Gascon

You're correct.  :y  I gave my header tank a good clean out with caustic and it 'cured' the message problem for a year or so. I ended up replacing the tank in the end with a new ne from vx - £30 IIRC

Mine randomly pops up with it every few weeks or so, mine could do with a clean!  :)

Not very nice stuff well not  at the strenght we use (32%) at work we use it as a detergent to internally clean our pipe work. It is an alkial. It burns skin too I have scars to prove it  :y

Have you tried taking it off and using a kettle descaling product in it,that may do the trick  :y

Interesting......

My warning msg appeared so I topped up a little and the message went away.  But came back again. I haven't had the system pressure checked , but can't see any evidence of a leak.

Does the caustic trick work because it lets the float move up and down freely???

As far as I could see, my float doesn't! But I would have thought that would have given me a warning msg all the time.  :-?

if you stick your finger on edge of float, can you push it down?

The connector can also fail, esp if some careless mechanic as missed the hole with coolant.

Sounds quite likely - esp pouring from 5L can and no funnel.

Can the connector be cleaned up or is it a gonner?  (I've got a similar sounding problem on my Elite - float is fine - message appears from time to time)

(caustic = caustic soda = sodium hydroxide.   Not nice stuff when concentrated and gets hot if you are disolving crystals - definitely use gloves and be very careful.    Its used in soap so is good at eating grime, but I doubt it will attack limescale - I think you need acid (descaler) for that (sorry - my chemistry is a bit rusty!))

I've never successfully fixed one, I go down scrapper and get replacement.  But only £30 ish from dealer, so don't pay more than £5 for a working one...

The float seems to be resting on the bottom of the expn tank.

Also noticed the beginnings of a circular crack in the tank, around the lid area. Guess I should replace it now before it blows?

Without a doubt ... if it fails under pressure during a run you could have a serious overheat problem :(

Apparently a common problem. Sounds like a new tank is in order.

if the float sticks, sign of poor coolant change regime...  ...consider a decent flush with forte.

many show signs of cracking around cap....

:-?  :-?  :-?  :-? If the GLS doesn't have the sensor, then surely it won't have the plug or the electrical gubbins to tell it's display there isn't enough coolant ....  :-/
I wouldn't know about lower spec acrs though  ;)  ;)  ;) :y ;D

Hi just read thread I have a 2000 W plate 2.2 omega CDX which has the check coolant level message on the display although the header tank is full. The temp gauge raises to about 90'c then stays there. The temp is usually around 80'c. I cannot see any wires around/ under header tank. Any help appreciated need car fixed urgently.

It's only a message! If your level is OK & the temp is OK then your car is still perfectly drivable.
If you're getting the message, then there MUST be a connection on the bottom of the header tank. Have you removed it from the inner wing & had a look? You don't need to remove any hoses to check. There's a clip holding the tank on at the inner wing, remove it & slide the tank towards the engine & then it''ll come away from its bracket. If it's still connected & all connections are good, then you possibly need a new header tank because the switch is integral to it. Around £35 from Vauxhall  :y

Will this fix the slightly higher temp reading. Gauge normally sits around 80'c but currently rises to 90'c since message came up.

So for some reason the gauge has actually been reading low. I'll remove header to locate sensor and bridge wiring with a paper clip to test.
Many thanks.
