Title: Headlamp Range fault on Xenon's
Post by: HI2DVY on 02 May 2010, 23:30:34: Got the dreaded "Headlamp Range" warning coming on and my MOT is due. Tested sensor on nearside suspension and works fine but only operates one headlamp (offside).

Do the servo's fail often on these? This is the first problem I've had with headlamp servo's - or will it just need a clean and a bit of lub?

Post by: feeutfo on 03 May 2010, 02:53:09: there is also another sensor on the rear suspension arm, might be worth checking that also, but it does sound like the servo motor has failed on the non working side.

Could swap the motors and see if the fault follows the failed motor to confirm, i guess...?

See what others say though, in my case it was the front sensor that failed.

er some confussion i think. Self levelling suspension is controlled by the 2 by 3inch square box by the fuel filter on rear drivers side.

Head light levelling sensors are both on the passenger side and visible from wheel arch on the door side of the wheels.

However, if both sensors are visibly intact then yes, headlights out imo.

Wrong side of the car mate ;) Look on the passenger side & you'll find the other headlight level sensor.

Not neccessarily. ;) Both mine looked OK, I even took the front sensor apart (I knew it was the faulty sensor via Tech II) and cleaned out inside the ball & socket. A 'new' sensor sorted it. :y

guessing tech2 not immediately available. Hotel21 next step obviosly.

None on fleabay so called the dealer - £106.93. :o

Not the best of pictures but this is the front headlight level sensor. Left hand side of car mounted between engine sump and lower wishbone...

I disconnected the link between the sensor and the suspension arm and, with the ignition and headlights on, rotated the sensor to chack whether the headlamps moved up and down in relation to the position the sensor was in. Not totally conclusive but usually gives an indiaction of where the fault may be.
