Possible Gearbox Selector Sensor???
When my previous Omega did something similar it went into limp home mode though so not certain. It is underneath passenger side of gearbox.

That's it. The next suggestion would be the selector as YZ suggested. There is a HowTo in the maintenance section, have a look in the index :y

i have just done a replacement for a member, in my garage, changed the box for him, different reasons, his had metal inside!
I also have had this same problem as you though, in a 3.2 omega, just revs and slow to get going, but works manualy in 1st, it was an old training police car so had been abused no doubt.
We put new box in and it worked fine there after.
gearbox not worth repairing so just bought a new one for it.
