Title: Auto in Limp mode again
Post by: Steveplumb on 14 May 2010, 20:54:08
A while back I asked for advice as to why my 2.2 auto sometime goes into limp mode when in ' D' but not in  1  2  or 3rd  . I had good advice and one day I will get round to taking up offers I had to get the codes read.  There was also advice that it may well be the cam sensor. Because re-starting nearly always clears the issue I am at present 'living with it ' The reason for this post is that I now realize that the times it happens is nearly always when I have done a very short trip, maybe a mile, stop for a while then restarting is often the problem time . Just wondered if this is a significant clue as  to where the fault is, or if it confirms suspicion of cam sensor. No warning lights ever show . cheers

I did not see original post but would assume the guys on here would have suggested gearbox selector sensor. If the gearbox  speed/load sensor does not know what to do, it goes into limp home mode. 1st, 2nd and third are not affected as they know where they are. Taking key out of ignition and re-starting will temporarily reset fault until the next time. Apologies if I have repeated what had already been said.

Check ATF level first. If that is ok clean the selector switch - on the n/s of the box. Pretty sure there are guides for both in the guides section. :y

Thanks for the suggestions, especially about taking the key out to reset,  rather than just turning off and re starting. Is there any logic as to why  if it is a dirty switch problem that it is so much worse when starting from 'warm' rather than cold or hot ?  Any idea what a dealer would charge to clean the selector switch ??

hmm...  so is the multi meter an alternative method to the punch in the slot or do both procedures have to be done ??

Either or. You still need to remove switch for clean/check contacts

the electrical contact "fingers" when cold are connected.when in use and electrical current flows "fingers/contacts" warm slightly and open up, connection is broken. cools down, contact made. :)
