OK here goes to cut a long story short, presently living in France and cat rots, take car to French garage who says that a cat will be 960 Euros plus fitting, so fly home buy aftermarket cat get it fitted saving about 500 Euros and all hell breaks loose, car goes into limp mode and sounds crap. So take car home to electrics expert who tells me that the car does not like the cat and is kind of not recognising it when carrying out self diagnostics, is this possible and if so why are people allowed to sell aftermarket cats that do not work.

After market cheap cats are pretty poor.
As for not recognising it, I am not so sure.......sounds poorly fitted to me (but hey, thats the french for you).
When you say rotten....was it as simple as a failed flexi joint?

Should have had the flexi-joint cut out and a new one welded in ;)

not everybody has the access to someone who can weld ;)

Admit having the god-like resource of DTM is a bonus, however, any decent welder should be able to do the job!

and would you have thought you'd be able to buy a flexi on its own if you hadn't been told?
The likes of Kwick Fit/etc are going to sell you what's easest for them & what has the most mark up. :y

I always knew the flexi was replaceable :)

I agree Rob, only probs are 1) I'm a dumbass and did'nt realise that the flexi was available alone and 2) the car was in France at the time and these guys rip your eye teeth out for anything, anyone who has complaints about UK garage prices should live here for a while it's mad.

I was quoted €700 for a replacement Bosal exhaust at a Feu Vert a few years ago! :-? I laughed & bought a tube of Gum Gum & an exhaust bandage to 'fix'it till I got home.
