Title: Tyre safety

Hi all,
I noticed the nearside rear tyre on my 2.5 Elite estate is down to the tread guides. God knows how it passed MOT last week, also as I have the dreaded low beam checklight on. Fiddled somewhere I suspect.
Anyhow, I punched in my reg on some tyre sites and they came up with different to what is on my car.
My tyres are 235x45x17x97Z (Avons) on Alloys

The sizes that came up were 205x65xR15Hx94 and 195xdittox91

Are these 235 tyres safe for my car and how come my rims are 2" bigger than the manufacturers listing ? I assume some modification?

Sorry if this is a 'typical newbie' query, but I have never had this happen before with any other car I have owned.

Have not got handbook to check against.

Don't believe everything you read on the net. If your rims are 17" I assume your car is a facelift, and that size is correct for your car. Most Omegas haven't used 15" for years (apart from in the boot)  :y

I assume I have a Facelift as window switches are on the door and car was first registered July 2000

I believe it was an option extra to have 17" wheels

Page 229 of the owners manual states 235/45/R17 Tyres ;-)

Andy, whilst on the subject of Alloys, I read somewhere about tyre people damaging the rims...is specialists tyre equipment needed for alloys

No specialist equipment is needed for alloys, just use a repretable company to change the tyres on the tyre machine. My advice would be to take a photo with date stamp of the alloy before you take it to them and then if when you get the wheel back it has damage to the rim then you can claim for a replacement alloy or repair....

I had one alloy damaged once on a Toyota Supra I had and the H-Q Tyre Services had to get the alloy repaired FOC ;-)

235/45 ZR17 are the correct tyres for your Elite.

Again, as you are near WIM, try them for tyres - they are normally very competitive.  They also have a touchless tyre remover, if you are concerned about your alloys...
