I took my oil cap off today to find some white gunk inside, is this the sign of knackered head gaskets?
-
not normally on the v6 unless you have an unexplained coolant loss, mine does the same thing when used on short trips,a good run with the pikey wagon cleaned mine up a treat
-
the rocker gaskets also leak a little along with the front wishbones need replacing do you think its safe on a long journey?
-
Yes, but will cost you in oil & tyres.
-
would wynns stop leak stop the rocker gasket leak until i get them replaced?
-
very unlikely :(
-
white gunk is probably condensation from short journeys - key to HGF would be coolant going down as mentioned, or white gunk on bottom of dipstick, white smoking etc etc..
Italian Tune it.

If you have only been doing short journeys then u will get white yoghurt on your filler cap so if you are going on a long trip you should notice that when you have cleaned off the gunk its gone :y
Do check that u havnt got oil particles in your coolant tank or/and water drops on your oil dip stick cos that cud point to HG problem :'(
As for your front wishbones u will notice wear on your front tyres & the car will shudder when u brake hard :(
As for Wynns stop leak DONT waste your money cos it WONT stop the rocker gasket covers leaking :(
-
but are all these problem safe to do a 500 mile round trip, mainly motorways?
-
if the cam covers are leaking over the manifolds then there is a small risk of it igniting
-
there is a smell of burning oil when the engine is hot
-
I'll probably be shot down in flames from the 'governers' on this site :-[ BUT i've owned enough V6 migs with leaking rocker covers (as long as its not p*ssing oil :o) to say that as long as u keep a watchful eye on ur oil level then a 500mile should present u with little probs :y
Just remember that ur wishbones are going to make ur braking shudder so try not to be heavy footed on the brakes unless in an emergency :o
The choice, as they say, is all yours :-/
-
bit of 'mayo' on the cap is normal, especically with short journeys, and some oils are far more prone to this than others.
castrol, Mobil 1, some other cheap oils often mayo more then vauxhalls own which doesnt suffer half as badly.

Thanks everyone for your helpful advice.

At some point, the oil leaking from the gaskets into the plug wells will cause damage to the HT side of the ignition system. You will get a misfire from damaged plug leads and/or dispack. Best to get them changed sooner rather than later. :y

if your in any doubt join the AA 48hrs before you set off they will bring you home if it all turns bits up
