do you revs stay level or go up and down as you said 500-600, when at normal temp dose it do same or stay level, as could just be a air leak.

revs stay at about say 600 with aircon off ,switched on aircon revs drop slightly then pick up to about 600

if it dose it again when temp is hot(out side temp) try and listern for a air leak, or spray a mist of water on the joints should see it suck it in, :y

George are you sure your air con is working? As a rule the idle should lift say 100 rpm when air con is switched on.
I would have thought also if there was an air leak it would have been all the time not intermitent, i coyld be wrong though.
