with the engine OFF try turning the fan by hand to see if it has sized up or has been locked . viscus fans do make a lot of noise when working

They also have a tendency to fail 'locked' so are always turning & making a noise akin to a jet engine
Although some advise their removal completely (LH thread BTW) getting a replacement will prove a problem as they are supposed to be stored vertically - do you think that this is likely to happen in parts stores or during transportation?
It's a lot quieter when not fitted or running but there is the risk overheating especially when under load for a time or idling in traffic

take it off it will be fine if you have air-con.
mind its a left hand tread and re-fit it when towing. :y

the air-con fans blow air over both rads when stationary(if its working)the fans are a two stage they run slow all the time the ac is on and increase speed when engine temp hits +90c  :y

My brother used to have a Rover 2.6 with a viscous fan that had seized.

The viscous hub is intended to slip significantly even when it is hot. If the hub seizes the fan spins at full engine rpm and can do 3 things:
- make lots of noise
- waste fuel
- break and fire fan blades outwards at high velocity (which is what happened to my brother) :o

& BMW were so impressed they bought the company ;D ;D (maybe they needed some viscous fans....)

is there a way of testing the aircon fans does the aircon have to be on all the time for this to work ie the heater set at low temp (would that not do any harm)

Seriously though, if the hub has seized don't be surprised if blades break off. :(

i seem to remember this happening on sierra 4x4 2.8 that i have many years ago don't remember what i did to fix the fan i know the fan smashed the rad to bits is funny how things come back to you when you have problems later in life (im making myself feel old now)

as soon as a/c is switched on regardless of what cabin temp is set at the fans run at slow speed.
the only time they run fast is when its hot(i.e on a hot day),when you turn engine off and remove key the fans run for about 60secs then stop :y

the car has climate control i think it has an auto and an off button but you can work the heater by using the + and - buttons would i just leave it on auto to get the aircon working

on a facelift the eco should not be showing
on a pre facelift the eco light should be unlit
this means a/c is on
