Title: Excessive fuel consumption
Post by: valliant72 on 26 May 2010, 23:53:27
Not sure why but im getting high fuel consumption £50 of fuel is only getting me about 40 miles, alot are short journey's but i still think it excessive. Check for codes and only get 12 and 31. All breathers are clean and checked for vacuum leaks, it generally idles perfectly but with the odd surge now and then. All sensors have been changed except the air temp sensor which about 500 ohms out of range. Tyre pressures are ok, brakes arent binding. So anyone have any ideas?

Unplug the MAF & see if there is any difference in the 'normal' running of the engine? :y

Check your exhaust system, specially the back box, baffles collapse and stuffing /horse hair blocks the outlet.

My Elite has only just 142 miles on £55 worth of fuel and I thought that was bad.

But my brakes are both corroded and the O/S/F was metal to metal before the pads/disk was changed, the N/S didnt get changed as it seems the previous owner has rounded the heads on the bolts which I have yet yo source replacements.  Plus I think my exhaust back box is starting to give way. :-/

i cant believe how bad it is on fuel at the moment, when u start it u get a whiff of fumes but then it goes and u smell it no more. I changed the MAF sensor last year, suppose i could try putting the old one back on to see if theres a difference. the back box could be on its way out looked today and its badly rusted all around the twin pipes into the box. But no sounds of blows. I say 40 miles theres about £15 left in there so may get about 55 if im lucky lol.

I do mainly round town driving in my V6. I was averaging 19.4 mpg. Did service over a few weeks.

Changed oil-no change in mpg.
Cleaned breathers (not dirty) no change in mpg.
Cleaned and checked brakes- no change in mpg.
Changed air filter (did not look old or dirty) now getting 20.4 mpg.
