I just finished refitting the head with the new head gasket, and went to start. THe engine fired up for all of 1/2sec, then stopped. Further spinning the starter showed the engine had no compression, and I have just found 2 lumps of hard plastic type stuff jammed in the crankshaft pulley. Presumably this caused the belt to slip and ....... :'(
Guess I'm looking for 16 new valves :'( Where's the best place to get them, dealers ?.

My guess would be the timing blocks were left in and jammed the cams. Try PMing Darth Loo-Knee, see if he has a pair of heads.

He only needs one Lee (2.2) :D

;D ;D Should have gone to specsavers ;D ;D
OK 1 timing lock then :P

I don't use timing locks, I do it by eye.......... maybe that's the problem :)
It was strange, I checked the timing again, set it up, turned the crankshaft 2 revs only to find the cams were about 4 teeth advanced. Reset and checked it again, same. It was only when I took off the belt I discovered the plastic bits. Having removed them the timing works as it should.
Its gonna be expensive, prices are around £200 for new valves and they can't do the job until next week.

yes, I was wondering about that, but aren't the cams and bearings matched to the head ?. Haynes says about keeping cam bearings in the right place, so if you swap the head which is also part of the bearing, do the cams have to be machined ?

I'll have a mooch around, might be able to get you a complete 2.2 head ;)

Hmm, I see a poss plan, they are out at wigan, and I currently work just past there, so if I get a hire car for tomorrow, I could pick up the head tomorrow, and earn some hours for this week. If the camshaft bearing thing is OK, I'll give him a phone. Thanks RobG

It is vital that the cam bearing caps stay with their original journal position on the original head but the camshafts can be swapped with no problem. A recond head will come with the caps fitted.

Thanks Kevin,
They don't have a head in stock for the Z22, but I will drop mine off first thing and they will re-do it, hopefully pickup mid afternoon.
Its all good fun this organising lark, finding a hire car next to a bank holiday somewhere local is fun, plus they want it back early, etc, etc.
