Hi all,
The brake lights at the back, on the bonnet have all stopped working, the bulbs seem fine. The other night lights are working but no lights when you step on the brake
any ideas?

No brake lights on my bonnet! ::) ::) ;)
the brake lights are in the outer light unit on the wings, those lamps on the boot lid are rear fog lights. I assume you've checked the lamps/bulbs themselves, they're a twin filament bulb. Brake light fuse in fuse 2, shared with the hazards :y

lol, i just realised what i wrote,
boot not bonnet. hope you had a good laugh!

Brake switch is where you've been looking. Look at the arm under the card cover .... it's there. Honest! :y

Do you mean the brake lights on the rear quarterpanels (wings) or the rear fogs on the bootlid :question Fogs fuse is #28

It's not the fogs, and not the lights on the rear qtr which come on when you turn your lights on, it's the light that are on the boot lid that are supposed to come on when you hit the brakes, they don't come on.

As said above ... twice! Your brake lights are in the wings ie stop/tail lights ... a twin filament lamp. The lights in the boot lid are your rear fog lights! Try them, it's the push on/push off combned with your headlight switch

Ok, hmm, I didn't realise. But the problem still is that the brake lights don't work, when I hit the brakes nothing lights up at the rear.
Someone almost ran into the back and then told me.
But the lights on the rear quarters do come on when you turn on the main lights.

Just them out, filements look fine and then tested them with multimeter, both filements are fine.
The lights don't come on, on either side of the car, surely both bulbs couldn't be blown,
But anyhow, I've checked, both filements in each bulb are working.

If both bulbs work outside of the car then it`s either fuse #2 or a dodgy brake switch
-
fuse is fine, checked that one and many others, so it must be the brake switch.
not sure how to undo it, it damn awkward. anybody replaced it before?

Before you go replacing the switch can you try your bulbs in another car
-

Does the high level brake light work :question and is your info display giving a warning. When you say "replaced the bulb, did you put your bulbs in the other car
-
not sure what the high level brake light is, i took some bulbs out of the other omega and put them in and they didn't light up when i hit the brake as before.

it`s in the centre at top of rear screen

Have you tried a meter on the bulb holders to see if power is present when pedal is pressed :question
-
no high level light on mine and no power coming through when you press the brake.
Have startd to try and take the switch out, i feel like breaking the damn thing, been trying to get it out for ages now, with my neck twisted and body contorted to get under neath the steering wheel area.
pulled the cable off it but can't seem to remove the switch.

Have a read through this, explains how the switch is removed

Do you have a tow hitch fitted, I had a problem with my lights (don't remember which ones) being disabled by a tiny bit of plastic in the hitch connection sticking in (or failing to return out) this small piece of plastic is there to turn lights off when towing so that you are not dazzled by reflection from the front of what you are towing. I just removed this small cylindrical piece of plastic from the hitch connection as I rarely tow. I had tried to lube it and free it to no avail, if you wish to keep it you need a new hitch connection.
-
thanks RobG, for that link, my switch looks a bit different, more like the land rover switch. not sure how to upload a pic of it.
damn thing is driving me crazy.

not tried this, will go and have a look, but then surely it would disable all the lights on the rear? no? not just the brake?

Just chatting with my father who fitted it originally he said it definitely was not all the lights but thinks it may have only been the fog (most likely) or reversing lights.
So maybe I am barking up the wrong tree here!

keep it simple and methodical..
4 page thread comin up ::)
