hi to all.ineed to do manifold gaskits both sides of my v6 3.0.has anyone got any hints that may help.it looks a pig of a job.thanks.......

How old/worn are all the other gaskets?
May be easier to do a top end rebuld in the long run?

have not done this job but heads off seams a bit drastic.
generally speaking if somethings tight i always use the drop the engine mounts to give more room.

heads off is the easiest way to do this - by far.
Ok, it's going to cost you a pair of head gaskets, but every one I've seen recently has been corroded to quite an extent.
..... and it gives you the chance to do the cam box seals at the same time.

Done my heads the other week and there would have been no way of getting the manifold bolts out with the heads still in place.
Bolts on both downpipes snapped, i had two broken studs in both heads, half the studs came out with the nuts and all the heat sheild bolts were knackeded.
Took bloody ages to get all the bits of broken stubs out of various holes, one tip though, when you put everything back together use lamba sensor paste on all the fixings and you shouldn't have a problem next time they need doing
Oh, according to TIS its head off to do the manifolds

Here ya go Big Pat, get your head around this, click on the link from JamesCDX, not a job for the faint hearted but but loads of help from the boys if you get stuck, the trick is if your in a rush to finish the job dont even start it, be methodical label all you remove, make notes, i replace as many bolts into the holes where i have removed an item (pulleys, water pump ect0 so im not hunting for the correct bolt in a box of different sizes. small plastic bags you can wright on with permanant marker are usefull

The drivers side is not to bad to do, about 2.5-3 hours start to finish.
The passenger side is actualy quicker to do but, more painful due to having to do most of the job from underneath. It requires removal of the B bolt, front pipe and oil filter.....the secret to refitting is to fit the studs first and then the manifold!
Post 98 cars tend to be trouble free with respect to studs etc, before this there can be 'issues'

how do you get around the fixings in the back of the heat shields?

Just a thought Bigpat, if , as you say, if the head gaskets have not been done long, were the manifold gaskets not done at the same time?

Passenger side is easy, drivers side requires removal of the coolant pipe.

all new parts were fitted.i have a feelin the monkey that done the job forgot to have a bananna(local garage) >:(i have looked at job and it dont look to bad.it can be done in without takin heads of.will keep you posted.thanks to all again for sound advice. :y
