How do you check whether the clutch is engaging on the AC compressor and is there a relay anywhere that controls it. TIA

How do you check whether the clutch is engaging on the AC compressor and is there a relay anywhere that controls it. TIA The original compressor has three 'pegs' at the front of it. When the a/c is off, these pegs stay still, when the compressor is engaged ie a/c turned on, they should spin. :y

I assume that`s on the V6`s Andy. Is it the same on the four pot :-/

I doubt there'll be much difference, the theory is the same anyway. You should be able to see the middle spinning with a/c on and stationary when the a/c is off.

Cheers Andy, will go and have a looksee  :)

either its a 4 pot or a v6 you must hear "clack" noise after you push the climate button..

I hear that noise also from the clit..only the timing differs..

Andy is this the bit that should spin

your arrow points to the pulley, that turns all the time. the rusty ring is the clutch that engages when you press the button.

The belt is always turning the outer pulley, it can't do anything else unless you take it off.  ;) It's the middle that you should see stop & start depending whether the a/c is off or on. Get someone else to press 'ECO' while you're watching the front of the pulley  :y

the whole lot will spin, if you stick your hand down there with the engine offobviously, you will be able to turn the clutch on the front by hand. :y

-
Pressed ECO on and off, can`t see anything turning. The three round "pegs" stay static. Is there a relay that operates the clutch or is it new compressor time :'(

It could be loads of things, but the most likely is lack of or insufficient refrigerant. there's a low pressure cut off switch in the system that prevents it running when it's lacking refrigerant.  :y

may need re-gassing, if insufficiant gas then the clutch wont go in.

 (must type faster ::)

Had it re-gassed, blew cold for a few days then stopped. I can turn the clutch by hand so does that mean the compressor is OK. Is there a relay or fuse I can check/swap out :question

was the system checked for leaks, ie vacuumed & left for any length of time, if you had this done recently there must be ome kind of guarantee. I'd take it back. There relays etc, but I haven't a clue where they are.  ::)

Had it gassed by Kwik-fit-up so`s there`s my problem. Got a mobile AC guy booked for 17 June just wanted to check out the obvious

				Rob do you have epc

-
Rob - disconnect electric plug on compressor and put 12v direct from battery across the 2 pins on the compressor (maintaining original polarity) - you will hear a loudish clunk as the clutch engages - no noise clutch breaked  :(
