Define 'horrible noise'??

I would say its a clancking sort of noise

Hi
Have been told the fault could be the dual mass flywheel does any one know if these are fitted to a 2.2 petrol ?

It's difficult to try and diagnose 'strange noise problems' by written description, and also noises can often come from a different place than you think there actually from ?.
When you say you 'switch off the car and start back up again there is a horrible noise, is that where by as soon as you switch off then back on again, or if you switch off, leave it for say 5mins, then start again (if you understand what I mean ?).
Are you sure that it's coming from the starter motor gearbox area ?.
Can you test if the starter motor is secure to it's mounting, or is it loose ?.
Any other information you can give us about the noise, or other symptoms ??.

as above need a bit more detail really....
Is it only at idle? Or with revs, does it go when moving, or changing gear? Does the sound change depending on revs? Does it do it in neutral or in gear.
